It won't fit. At least not standing up. These are 31.7" and they are against the back seat and touching the rear hatch.

With the "floor" removed, would a standard WK sized cargo mat (weather tech, mopar, etc.) that fits over the "floor" fit the void as well? In the interest of gaining more vertical room for trunk storage without it having gaps all around.

It's possible, but I'm not positive. The WeatherTech's are laser cut so it's a direct fit but there is a slight lip that goes around the edges - that's what I'm not sure about. If you can find a second hand one and don't mind cutting it up, I'm sure it'll fit!
