Smaller rims touching calipers

So I decided to change my aluminum rims to steel and the rims I got are 1 inch smaller and hit the brake calipers on the front. Should I use spacers, grind the calipers down or change the rotor and caliper to be smaller?

I ground down the calipers when I did a disc brake conversion on my CJ after putting the Chevy 1 ton 14 bolt rear axle in to fit my 15" steel wheels. I didn't have to take off much and it is still tight in there but as long as the wheel is free to roll you are fine.

I'll try that,I didn't want to weaken the caliper if I took too much off.

Changing to smaller brakes on a 5000lb+ SUV generally isn't a good idea.

So I'm grinding off a lot of the caliper to try and fit these wheels on. The stock disc is 13 inches, would it be ok to go to a 12 inch drilled and slotted disc with new calipers to match?

no, it would not be ok.
why are you even thinking of that instead of just getting wheels that fit?

What the hell? You bought the wrong size wheels, so you're going to spend money on smaller brake parts and effort making them work rather than use the right size wheel?

Good luck getting something smaller to work in there. Best to just stop working on vehicles.
