REC Nav radio - loss of volume/no sound

Add one more thing to the list of issues... '05 GC Limited

A few weeks ago, I started noticing that the radio volume would drop randomly. It doesn't go completely away. Just drops in volume dramatically. If at volume level 10, you can't hear anything, but turn it up to 25 and you can. Then just as randomly, the volume level will come back to normal. All other functions of the REC Nav radio work.

Starting this week, it had stopped being random. The volume level dropped and hasn't come back. I can still turn the level up to hear, but I have to have it maxed out to hear anything at highway speeds.

Any ideas? Wife is taking the Jeep on a trip at the end of this month and I know she'd prefer to listen to music, rather than just road noise...

It could be an electrical connection coming loose or the amplifier instead of the radio.

I had thought about that, but if it was a loose connector, wouldn't the sound quit entirely? I still have sound, just not at normal volume levels.

I will check connections at the amplifier (might affect volume levels?)...where is the amplifier located?

The Boston Acoustics amp is in the driver rear panel, inside the cargo area. Also test your battery. These things lose their freaking minds when the battery is slightly off.

Got in the Jeep last night to go to dinner with the family (and look at Christmas trees...), and I was explaining to my wife about the radio. She turned the volume control and the radio was working perfectly! Dammit! Operated flawlessly all evening...

Then this morning, back to the same old low volume crap...

Had similar problem, volume would not adjust and also could not turn radio off.
After stopped and turned engine off and removed the key, started up and all back to normal.

Dont like this.

I've only had two issues with my REC, the left-channel would go out. This didn't happen mid-drive, but at start up. Both times the issue was resolved by pulling over and shutting down and restarted the Jeep.

I suspect it's a CANBUS issue.

99sajeep, I would try reseating the connections behind the REC and amp. The REC is very easy to pull out to reseat the connections.

Dug into the radio issue yesterday.
Pull unit out of the dash. Pulled off the side panels of the radio to look inside and see if there were any obvious signs of some type of damage.
Nothing.

Pulled the amp out of the back. Nothing obvious.

Checked fuse for amp. Good.

Disconnected all connections at radio and amp. Even pulled the main harness connections at the fuse panel.

Radio is still operating at a diminished volume level. Has been constant now for 5 days. Everything works, but can't hear anything unless volume level is at least "13" and has to be above "25" to hear while driving.

I guess I need to look at replacing it.

I also have a random issue with mine on my '08 Overland. Sometimes when I start the vehicle there is NO sound at all. I can correct it by turning off the vehicle, counting to 10... 1 mississippi, 2 mississippi etc. Then restart and all is right with the world. It happens at random times. Sometimes I will go a month with no issues, then the next few days it happens. Doesn't matter if the radio was turned off prior to shutdown or not. It just happens.

Anyone have any thoughts?

So, I'm looking at the prices for replacing the radio. I'm looking at $400+ for a used factory replacement. Or, I'm looking at $400+ for aftermarket radio with necessary adapters to make steering controls, etc. work right.

I might as well look at a factory radio as it would be easiest at this point.

But...
Is this volume issue really a radio problem (circuit board issue maybe)? An amp problem?
I'd hate to spent close to $500 for another radio only find out it's something else in the Jeep.

Anybody have any other ideas?

I got your message. I'll actually be there in 2 weeks. Haha I'm from there originally and will be visiting family for the holidays. I can meet up with you between Christmas and New Years. So let's just say shipping won't cost anything if you decide to buy mine.

Assuming I don't have something else (other than the radio itself) causing problems.

I would go aftermarket, the NAV maps for the REC are no longer updated and haven't been for years.
