Question for Canadian CRD drivers: Where do you buy your oil?

I've found that many Jeep dealerships have different prices and products.

One carried a Pennzoil product (apparently the new oil for this engine, phasing out mobil 1) but it was $16, and he bumped it down to $13 for me. That's still pricey.

There was another dealership who told me he prefers to deal with Mobil 1, and sold me a 5w40 for $10 roughly.

I'm concerned about this product being sold in 1L only. The markup must be a lot more on those bottles than the 4.4L I'm used to.

Canadian Tire tried to give me the wrong product, and Partsource seemed to have no 229.51 or 229.5 (my post-dpf-delete choice).

I have yet to try MB dealerships to see what they carry.

I'd like to know if you guys know of any 5L'ish sized jugs of 229.51 or 229.5 preferably, that you guys have seen in Canada. I'm living near Toronto, Ontario.

I suggest you delete the DPF so you can use 229.3 and 229.5 (without the "1" i.e. without the 229.51 or 229.31). The "1" is for low soute for the dpf.

The oil is then about $5 a liter available at WalMart .. Mobile-1 European Car 0w-40 which is 229.5

You can also use Rotella T6 also available at WalMart which has a $5 rebate

VW dealers have 229.51 oil at approx. $10. The Touareg TDI has the same needs as the CRD. Just ask for Castrol professional oe. The best solution is a GDE tune with dpf delete and you will have no problem finding oil at much more reasonable price.

Find a local bulk oil dealer near you. If you buy a more than one oil change worth, they might give you a good price.

Thanks. I was aware of the 229.3 229.5 being a replacement for 229.31 229.51, but neither show up on Rotella T6. I only see 228.31. Can you explain why you mentioned Rotella T6? I believe I've seen it mentioned other places too, but I didn't see any reasoning for it.

I have a DPF delete scheduled for next week.

If I ever get around to buying a GDE tune and deleting my DPF filter I will probably go the Shell Rotella route as well but until then I will keep buying Total Quartz INEO off Amazon down in the USA.

I used to buy it from www.rmeuropean.com

I've also bought the TotalQuartz INEO jugs online from idparts.com. Still pricey after currency conversion, shipping & taxes (about $10-$11/litre), but much better than Canadian Tire ($16/litre).

The Mobile-1 is 229.5 (without the 1) and is on amazon also.

If you have prime it's free shipping and $23.88 us for 5 quarts.

I get the pennzoil ultra platinum 5w-30 from the dealership for 11 dollars a bottle, oil filter is Man Filter, for 45 bucks. I change the oil twice a year, so I couldn't care less saving 50 bucks or whatever.

That wont ship to where I live, and last time I tried to order well priced oil online, shipping was nearly 200 dollars. So no thanks.

Yeah, I never have it shipped directly to me either because the customs fees/shipping is ludicrous. Fortunately I am just across the border from Massena, NY so I have it sent there FREE with my prime account.

I know of a lot of Ottawa people who have their stuff shipped to the UPS store in Ogdensburg, NY and just make the trek down the 416 on a Saturday. Still, a lot of hassle for you just to save a few bucks on oil.

Thanks for the help guys. I bought Mobil 1 0w40 European formula 229.5 spec in 4.4L bottles at Canadian tire. They were on sale too. I think this will be my future choice as well.

Does anyone have a reason to claim that 229.3 is superior in any way?

Also, can anyone clarify this statement on the following website:

http://conflictedracer.wordpress.com...erokee-diesel/

Regarding a DPF delete, the following is mentioned:

"You can buy 229.31 oil (and not 229.51) which is substantially cheaper ($7 a quart down from $11 a quart for 229.51)"

And

"229.31 is designed to be an engine oil versus 229.51 which is designed for DPF equipped engines 1st, engine oil 2nd."

Is that true? Should this read that the DPF delete allows 229.5 or 229.3 and not 229.31? I believe 229.31 is just an older oil used for DPF systems.

I went out today hunting for oil and no luck at Crappy Tire or Walmart for the 229.51 oil. NAPA has the liqui moly stuff for $4000 a barrel but seems a bit hard to load into the vehicle on my own... MB does list with a few brands I have seen for sale in Canada: https://bevo.mercedes-benz.com/bevol...229.51_en.html

Can anybody comment on where to get this oil as economically as possible? I am not going to be getting the tune or remove the particulate filter at this time so I want the 229.51. Perhaps it is cheaper to just have it serviced at MB? Driving to the US is an option if need be.

Thanks, Steve
