Octane requirement

Howdy y’all. Recently purchased an 06 commander 5.7 and owners manual calls for 89 octane. I’m in Colorado and it goes from 87 to 91. I’ve read because of altitude 87=89 however just want to know if anyone has legit feedback on this. Do I use 91 since no 89?

You can run 87 in them just fine. The pcm will pull timing if it knocks. You need a little more octane for max performance though.

Welcome to the forum. I'd say that it also depends on the altitude you drive at. I am at about 3000 ft. and, until I raised my compression ratio, I would run 87 in the winter and in the high (100-110*) summer temperatures, I alternately run 87/91 or all 91 depending on the type driving I was doing. Before the ratio change, when I traveled to altitudes above about 5000 ft. I'd even run 85. Some of my best fuel economy was achieved at or above 5000 ft. when running 85.

Like caulk04 says, the PCM will pull timing as needed so, depending on your altitude, you may want to experiment a little and see which octane works best for you and your driving conditions.

Cool. Definitely appreciate the input. I’m mostly in Denver so above 5000 feet.

Most places I've been that are 5000 feet or above have 85 instead of 87. Do you have 85 in the Denver area? That must be what the "5280" in your screen name is all about??
