New and in trouble

Hi, I'm a novice as far as Jeeps go and not much better with engines although not scared of using a spanner or 2. Just bought a 2006 CRD 3.0. It was running fine as far as the engine goes then my son in law rings to say he just filled up and its started running rough. When I got chance to look it was billowing white smoke and cab also smelled, rev counter showed slightly rough idle (it was steady previously) so I lifted the hood to see if anything jumped out at me.Yep it did the engine looked like it was going to jump out. Am I right in thinking it's probably the head and most likely gonna cost way too much to repair?
Any suggestions good or bad will be appreciated.

Not to sound mean, but did you verify with your SIL that he filled it up with diesel? Hopefully, he didn't put gasoline in it...

As the others said, verify what fuel was put in it. If it was gas you can try to clean it out but if things were damaged it might be beyond reasonable repair.

Possibly just a bad batch of fuel? Water in fuel sensor? Fuel filter? have you checked these?
Any DTC codes?

Because it went from tip-top to crappy after a fill up, I would start there (with the fill up). It sucks when coincidental timing sends you down the wrong path but I try to think of cause and affect in this situation.
