Issue w/ Factory Radio

I'm having a strange issue with the factory radio: When you turn on the headlights, the main display dims. Not a problem at night, but during daylight hours you can barely read it it's so dim. When you put on the turn signal it brightens up, then goes dim again when the blinker turns off. Turn the headlights off it brightens, turn them off it dims again.

Not sure if this is the exact unit, but it looks like this:

Regards,
Bill

Has the backlight adjustment on the turn signal stalk been working or is inoperable?

Just sounds like the day/night setting is reversed. You can force that on most vehicles. I don't know how on your radio, but there is a Settings button.....

@jeeptorino68
The interior light adjustments on the stick work just fine
@nwoods
I don't think that's it because it will brighten up to normal when you put on the turn signal... it's very odd. Sometimes it will stay bright, then suddenly dim itself. Also, it's ONLY the radio, the rest of the dash is just fine!

Bill

@jeeptorino68 It appears to be the interior light brightness ring on the turn signal stick. Jiggling that when it dims will USUALLY brighten it back up. I keep it on the 1st click, for full interior brightness. Must be some oxidation or something causing a contact issue there? I can't see any way to take this apart to clean it, is there no way to service it? Is it a PITA to remove & replace this stick?

Regards,
Bill

Sounds like it's time to replace it to me.

Yeah, from those symptoms you're looking at a failed/failing multifunction switch. The upshot is that it did get several revisions across its life to last longer and feel better, and if you go with a current Mopar part it'll probably last you the life of the vehicle and then some. (Some of the aftermarket ones are probably fine too, but once bitten twice shy there. A lot of them have really bizarre stalk action and crappy detents on the dimmer ring.)

The stalks are not designed to be serviceable, and even if you can get it apart and back together, very likely the issue is that the internal contacts are damaged, which isn't something you can really repair.

Easy job. Disconnect the battery and have all your tools on hand and you'll be drinking a cold one in under an hour. Wheel stays on; you only need to remove the column surround and undo a couple screws holding the switch in place.

Just make sure you get one that has controls for your vehicle's equipment — if you've got fogs and/or automatic headlamps, you'll want a version with those controls. More basic stalks do exist for more basic trims. If you're buying through a dealer or Mopar, give 'em your VIN and they can make sure you get the right one.

@colinzj Sorry for the late reply, the forum never notified me of your response!!!

Anyway, thanks for the info, I'm glad it's an easy job. I have a base Laredo, no frills... not fogs or auto headlights. According to Rockauto, the part #'s are 5183952AA, 5183952AB, 5183952AC, 5183952AD, 5183952AE, 5183952AF, SW5299. They do not have a Mopar part listed, just WVE whom I've never heard of... anyone familiar with this brand? For some reason the one WITHOUT fog lights is $10 more than the one WITH fog lights?!?! Can I save $10 and get that, knowing it just has a function I won't be able to use?

Regards,
Bill
