Gauges Die - Christmas Tree Lights

I've got a 2005 3.7l with an intermittent electrical problem. It goes through times where the gauge cluster will quickly die and then come back on, with all the waring lights list for 1-2 seconds. It usually does it 10 or 15 times in a row, quickly. I also lose the HVAC. I do not lose radio, wipers, or headlights (I think). I've read that it could be the ignition lock cylinder or the ignition switch. Can anyone confirm?

That sounds like a dying ignition switch losing the switched 12V contact(s). Can you replicate the situation by jiggling the key when it's in the Run position?

I guess what is tripping me up is the wipers and engine staying on. If it was related to losing hot/the RUN positition, why would the motor and wipers keep working?

Pics for good measure:

My XJ sometimes has the same thing happen -- the switches often times have multiple switched 12V contacts and one can fail intermittently. If I jiggle the key on my XJ the gauges and stereo will cut out as will the blower, but the engine will continue to run normally.

I'd say bad switch still.

Agreed, There is a recall going on with these switches. Let them fix it when they come in..

I've seen that recall as well - I've seen that it's a known issue, but CRYCO/FIAT doesn't know a fix yet. Is that still the case?

They know the fix, the parts just haven't made it there yet. That was the explanation I was given by the last dealer rep I talked to.

Could be two things, the ignition switch or the multifunction switch, the left stalk on your steering wheel. I had this too, picked up a new ignition switch last week from Oriellys and 30 minutes later no problems anymore. I'm not waiting for the recall parts.

If anyone is still experiencing this issue, please report it to Chrysler Customer Service at 1 (800) 334-9200. I am trying to get them to issue a recall on this specific issue as the ignition switch did not fix the problem. It is a known issue but what is not well known is that when this happens, your turn signals are inoperable and the airbags also may be affected. I have no idea how many people will need to report it but I can guarantee that thousands are experiencing the problem.

The recall mentioned above is Recall Number P41 and is not for the electrical problem but for the actual switch tumbler assembly moving to the off position inadvertently. This is usually due to someone hitting the keys with their knee. The problem with the gauges failing along with the turn signals and who knows what other electrical functions is not covered in this recall. That is why I am trying to get them to issue a new recall to cover this problem.

My CRD does this exact thing... Occasionally my wiper will cycle once with a short honk. I have already replaced the elec part of the Switch, with current dealer stock, same issue..

I've had the same problem with my 05 grand cherokee. Dropped it off at the dealership February 1st... It's now June 15th and I still have not gotten my jeep back. So disappointing

Had the same problem with my 2006 Grand Cherokee. Followed some of the suggestions from the forum and tried to replace in ignition switch (not that hard to do). The Dorman 924-727 fit perfectly, lights all worked etc. however would not let the transponder start the car. Cleaned the contacts and reinstalled the old ignition switch and the car started right up. Here is the rub, the panel lights have function normally for two days of driving with the old ignition switch. If problem reoccurs going to try a different switch most likely the 4685719AB rather than the 4685719AI. Go figure?
