45RFE trans into a 2005 WK

Greetings from WJ land. I am an avid carouser on the WJ side of the forum, but have a question for you WK owners today. I am looking a purchasing my first WK model Jeep, its a 2005 model with the 3.7L V6. It has a bad trans, and I happen to have a 45rfe trans sitting around that is in good shape. I know that in the WJ's the only difference between the 45RFE, and the 545RFE trans is the TCM programming. Is this still true with the 2005's as well? Can I swap in the 45RFE and still get the 5th gear like the WK came with from the factory? Will it be a direct bolt in?

Nope. 4.7 and 5.7 WK models are the only ones to have the RFE trans. Others have the Merc trans, NAG1 etc.

Ah, I see... I was under the impression that the 3.7, being a smaller version of the 4.7, had the same trans behind it...

And, everything, control wise, is very different.

Can't stay away, caulk04? How's your new ride? I've got most of the bugs worked out of the 08 PCM/TCM on mine and am happy with the way everything works now. Thanks again, for coaxing me into doing the mod. Well worth it, IMO.

I'm glad you like it! I've been coming back to read a couple of build threads I subscribe to and I take a peek through the regular forum, obviously.

If you've never been in a newer Chrysler with the 8spd, don't do it! You'll find an excuse to buy one. I won't, however, be tuning this one. It'll cost 6 credits AND I'll have to send the PCM out for unlocking (2015+ I think). Besides, I pulled the stock file just to nose around in it and woah...there's a LLOOTT more in it. Good thing is, there really isn't anything I want to change in the tuning because it's honestly good.

Great, glad you're liking it. I've only been in one Jeep with the 8 speed and the only thing that got my attention is that it was almost continuously up or down shifting. Not saying that's bad, as I now have the 545RFE doing about the same thing. This way, I can mostly keep the RPM somewhere in the power range. I've also discovered that the one DTC I couldn't figure out, P2704, Inadequate element volume, 4C clutch, is caused by having the 6 speed switch "ON" with the HPT. Everything still works normally though. I turned it off and went back to the 5 speed shift pattern and the code immediately went away. Turned it back on and the code came back. Don't know which way I'll leave it, but at least I can now easily access 2P in manual mode.......thanks to you.

I am still trying to get my finances moved around and in order so I can buy a Tesla. With it, I won't have to worry about a transmission, engine, differential(s), tuneups, oil changes, etc., because they don't have/need any of those things. I am shooting for around the middle of this year to order one......probably the Model S Performance. I'd love to get the soon to be released Model S Plaid, but I can't justify the price. It does have over a 500 mile range though. I also have to get rid of the SRT8 and maybe the Jeep. Not too wild about getting rid of the Jeep, but we don't really need 3 vehicles with only one driver now. Time will tell. Stay in touch.

Interesting that it throws that code. At least with HPT you can turn that code (or any other) off altogether and keep the 6spd operation.

Sometimes I miss this forum, it seems like there's more people in the Ram forum I use who are certain of things but are actually mistaken. 4th gen Rams used the 545RFE as well as the 8spd so there's always an argument over which is better, usually from people who've only ever had one of them. I will openly admit that serviceability on the 8spd is ludicrous. $22/qt fluid and the filters are integrated with the pan, no dipstick, must lift the rear of the truck several inches to check fluid level correctly and so on.

I've been hearing that the newer vehicles (all makes) are making it harder and harder for us gear heads to work on. The PCM in yours is a good example. Sounds like transmission service and fluid level checks is maybe even more difficult. I'll stick with the older stuff.....at least for now. It's bad enough, but we can figure most of it out.

As for some of the forums, you're right, some have more than their share of "know it alls" that don't and will argue with you forever. The LX forums started getting that way, but it seems to have settled down now so people are actually trying to help each other again. That's what I like about this forum, everyone tries to help everyone else as best they can.
