06 GC a/c recharge but compressor wont engage

My 06 GC laredo v6 has been sitting since Covid hit a year and a half ago .I have not started it since .Put in new battery today and it started first crank.I did not expect that.Let it run for quite a while and could not get a/c compressor to engage.I know I had a slight a/c leak as I usually had to recharge it every few years.how do I get the compressor to engage so I can recharge the system?? Charlie

You need to keep filling with refrigerant with the AC engaged until a minimum pressure is reached for the compressor clutch to kick on, then fill to spec. The freon cans will have enough pressure in them to get you to the minimum for the AC clutch to engage.
