05 wk gas skid rusted

My gas tank skid is completely rusted out in the center exposing the plastic tank.
How vulnerable is the tank? Or should I even be worried about it at all?
Thanks all

Isn’t that what holds it in?

Good point lol I don’t know. I was worried about the plastic being soft but now I’ll have to look at what you said. It’s just the center for now but it won’t be long before the sides fail.
Thanks for the input

Yes, the skid plate, either the metal guard or the true skid plate, is all that holds the tank up. I would start searching out a replacement.

I have an 05 and replaced mine last year. Take the opportunity to replace the fuel pump also, if you have not already.

Ok on the fuel pump. Haven’t done it yet.
As far as the skid goes I have the full skid. Should I look for stock replacement or aftermarket since I have to get another anyway??
Thanks again for all the help

I don't have the skid on mine, so it has an almost skid plate, more of a frame. If you don't need it as a skid plate, PITA, but you could drop it, cut out the deep and through rust, wire rush the surface rust and rustolium the snot out of it.

If you do want the protection back, maybe weld or rivet on a 3/16" plate over the hole... or aftermarket. OEM is over $250 IIRC and a thicker aftermarket wouldn't be much more. Just make sure whatever faces up is smooth, so it wound abrade the plastic.

My skid plate was purchased on Amazon from Mopar in 2017. It cost me $282 at the time. When I took it off I learned that there was no way possible to repair or reuse it. Sold it for scrap metal and got a few $$.

Ha! Got under mine to look at some stuff and realized I do have the gas skid on there. Dull black looks like plastic. I cracked me up. I thought the straps were holding it on.

Jeep gets a second person........I thought the front plastic cover was a skid plate until I changed oil for the first time.

LOL I have the same POS on mine. Replacement in el garaha. I'll bet I can get it to skip a few times on a storage pond.

How about that weird ast rear suspension frame thingy? Is it active, passive, good, bad or ugly?

Who makes good aftermarket skids for the fuel tank? I’ve only found one but I’d like more options if there are any?
