The search for a new engine begins- help?!

Sister and her husband are looking for an engine to replace the one that pooped out on its drive from Seattle to Montana.

It's a 1984 Jeep Grand Wagoneer and I'm searching hopelessly for a list of what engines can be most easily put into this beast AND where to even start finding some engines. As of now they just have one mechanic out in Montana 'keeping an eye out' for any engines he comes across but I'd love to help expedite the process.

ANY info/leads appreciated

FSJ are a pleasure to work on and it is great you are fixing it up.

Easiest fix is another AMC V8, the 360 would be the cheapest to obtain second hand. I see them on eBay for around $600 but that is a lottery.

If you get a 304 or 401, make sure you get the flywheel as they are matched to the engine size and a different one will not be balanced.

Suggest you put up a classified on this site seeking one and mention it on the CJ forum, lots of guys there breaking FSJ to sell the 360 to upgun a CJ.

That is the cheapest and easiest way to repair a GW, you could go crazy for a SBC and upgun to 300 bhp, see Novak Transmissions website for what is involved.

My '65 Gladiator has a Chevy 350/290HP. I didn't install it but I'm very happy with it. It's probably the most common motor ever and after market stuff is insane. If your a purist than ignore what I just said. Good luck

What does "pooped out" mean?
