J20 Extended Cab - Paint

After years of wrestling with Gladys I have her up and running well, new radiator and brakes and she is out of the secondary garage.

Unfortunately in the year she was only partially under cover and the paint has now deteriorated from terrible to flaky to rust patina.

My go to paint guy at Ketok Magic Blitar (2 Jeeps already full repaint, numerous dents repaired) gave it an inspection and highlighted just how bad the previous paint job was, lots of bondo and some rust, large areas of reaction to the substrate etc. He recommended bare metal respray, starting by taking the truck apart. he also recommended taking the engine out to paint it properly in original colours.

So off it went yesterday, having agreed a new Indonesian paint job, red white and red. White roof to keep the heat down.

still undecided what to do with the taiigate, this one is locally made but I really wanted the big Jeep letters.

Hopefully should be back in 2 months, paying $3000 but this is a rare truck and worth about $15k here.

I will not be able to get the raised letters but i think I will fill in the number plate area and paint or sticker the letters on the flat surface.

If I could get a full, bare metal respray for $3K around here, I'd repaint everything I own!

Look forward to seeing the Jeep done!

I think Decals, in white and the 'corrects' font, would look great on the tailgate!

Well, we started getting it apart.

The windshield frame is very rusty, not sure if that is the original pattern metal? has it been repaired before? The glass was in a rubber seal with the stainless trim but then screws were holding the whole assembly into the frame. This is a part I want to get right as the roof is fibreglass and I was not planning on a roll cage in the cab.

Floorpans are rotten, the cab corners, bottoms of the fenders.

Going round it with my man Jaipur he was repeating again and again "Ganti....ganti....ganti....uhhhh ganti.....' Change, change, change.

The frame is solid.

With these old Jeeps the availability of new panels is very poor, but they would be expensive to ship and import so my man is getting out the hammer and beating some tin. No sign of any sections for windshield frame on the net anyway.

The bed is off and gone to be stripped. I expect the bottoms are rotten, signs of mega bondo in the past.

So progressing well, a big job for the shop but one they will want on their wall of beauty.

Now thinking, those headlight bowls are round and not square as the front metal is same as an older Gladiator. do I stay with the original grille or go old school Gladiator shield? I like the look, it is very classic.

Does anyone know where i can find an original Gladiator grille?

If you can find the parts; the gladiator grills and pie-pans look amazing!

They certainly do and I am actively looking for at least the grille. I would then go for two round headlights and 2 driving spots and grind teh front valance down.

I found a used J20 tailgate 8,166 miles away in Oregon. It will not be cheap, old FSJ parts are getting pricey, but it will make the rear end look like a J20. Seller was great, a J10 owner.

The tailgate arrived, stuck in customs for a week. Rust free but with a few dents from a hard life, it will be perfect when mounted. My best purchase so far, it will make the truck look like it should.

Moving on now to bare metal.

And an epoxy primer on to the bare metal. We are an island so need to get it on quick.

You will note the join up teh side between the original cab and the extension and the mods to the bed to shorten it to 67 inches.

The metal is really sound. I was worried by the bondo on the surface that the bed was riddled with tin worm and the cab corners were toast but they are REALLY solid. teh scuttle looks amazing, only the windshield surround gave some concern and that has now been welded up.

so we continue.....

The only welding so far has been the bottom of the fender, a small patch. The floors in the cab will need some patches.

My body guy's moaning may not have been entirely accurate!!!!!

so the decals I have are one small AMC logo, original, that came with the tailgate and the big JEEP letters on the tailgate.

From China I have ordered:

4X4 sign both sides on rear bed (chrome) - $6 each
AMC logo for grille - $9
AMC Jeep signs for both side of fender $10 each

i cannot find J20 emblems for the sides, I will make do with the AMC era repros.

I found teh same AMC Jeep sign for $26 in the US, same fingers in the photo. Described as a licensed MOPAR product. I must have got the unlicensed one.
