Steering Wheel Size & Refinish

Hello all,

I have a dilemma that Id like some advice with. I have a steering wheel that needs some attention. I was going to disassemble and refinish, but upon closer inspection it seems like there are some sort of rivets or compressed formed fasteners and not Allen bolts like I thought. Well maybe I can drill them out and find something suitable for reassembly, after all I am of the mindset that if it can be built, than it can always be rebuilt. However, there is always the Cost + Time = to Outcome Equations versus purchasing a new one. Does anyone have experience with this, or ideas to think about? Also, this is 13-1/2 steering wheel, which feels a little jerky driving with 1 hand. Being that I have a 1980 with the narrow track axles...Will a larger 15 steering wheel make a noticeable difference? Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

15" wheels will give you a 'softer' feel and decrease the amount of felt effort to steer.

As to disassembly, it depends. The pic looks to be a 3 piece steel assembly with opposing wood/plastic rivet bonded (or thermo-set if the rivets are for show) to the frame. I've smashed a few wheels, finding one-piece, two piece, and three piece assemblies. All look similar assembled but are manufactured quite differently. You will take a chance that it won't reassemble well, depending on the quality of the subparts. No worries about those rivets, but finding the right bolt combo to get it back together (and looking right) might be dicey.

I decided against refinishing it initially, thinking that the end result would not be what I want it to be. Not to mention, the size just didnt feel right to me. I kind of figured the same thing you mentioned about the scavenger hunt to find the proper hardware for reassembly. So I started a search and found this beauty on EBay.
As it turns out this morning, I lost the auction by ONE freaking dollar. I waited days until the countdown, man I was pissed. Which provoked me to go to Plan B...spend even more money! Dang.

It is larger at 14-3/4, billet aluminum (no crappy powder coating to flake off), and leather wrap. I am however, second guessing the leather though. How do you think it will hold up over time considering I live in the sunshine state? I also like the hardwood and stainless combo that chris87xj recommended on the other thread. Oh yeah forgot to say, now that I have pulled the trigger...I am going to start the dissection on the steering wheel, since there is nothing to lose and I just want to find out. Just Because, ya know!

This one is from Summit...it's a 9-hole to fit on a repro GM column (so I could move the ignition). I used the Grant you referenced years ago on a kit car project. Very nice workmanship on both of them. Life IS better with a one piece frame and a 15" diameter.
