CJ, YJ, TJ Fender Mod

Anybody ever done this? I saw it in 4-Wheel & Off Road back in the '90s (50 Cheap Tricks) and decided it would be cool.

Materials:
  • 4 ft of piano hinge
  • couple dozen pop rivets
  • enough wire, zip ties, and split loom to re-run the wiring for the parking indicators (optional, but SO much nicer than having to unplug/replug the lights back into their sockets)
  1. Remove the fender
  2. Mark and drill holes for pop rivets on both the tub and trailing edge of fenders
  3. mount the piano hinge to the tub
  4. mount the fender to the piano hinge
  5. clearance the inner fender to clear the front tire
  6. use the 3 front bolts to secure the fender back to the grille
  7. repeat for the other side

I can literally sit on my tire to change the spark plugs. Handy for underhood repairs without having to reach over the fenders. Also, just looks cool at car shows.

Best $8 I ever spent.

Oh yeah - forgot to show the 'during' pics. I'd done this about a week after slingin' mud at one of the local lakes. I've long since cleaned that mess up.

The fenders also fold pretty much all the way back to the doors,

Great mod! And even better that it didn't even cost you much.

Thanks! Like I said, I saw it in the magazine, thought it was cool and that there would be so many neat things I could use it for, and then after I did it... not so much. LOL! It did come in handy when I popped the clutch bellcrank wheelin' one day, later when I did an in-frame engine refresh, and it will come in handy when I do the rehab things I have planned for this summer... not to mention, it just looks cool at car shows.
