New to the Jeep life 4x4 questions

Hi everyone, we just bought a 2015 Cherokee 4x4 Sport model, automatic transmission.

It came equipped with the "active drive one" 4x4 system.
now the questions:

1. Can we shift on the fly to the different modes? or do we have to put it in neutral make the switch and then back into drive?

2. Is snow mode similar to 4-wheel low? (we get a lot of snow up here in Canada)

3. is there a speed restriction on any of the "modes" in 4-wheel drive.

Thanks for the help it is greatly appreciated.

You can shift on the fly to all the different modes "on the fly" with AD-1 since there is no Low range.

Snow mode isn't even close to 4-Low. Changes the traction control settings, power distribution, and shift points. (See FAQ for more information.)

There are no speed restrictions for any of the modes since you don't have a Low range. There is a link to a video that explains how your 4x4 system works at the top of the forum if you're interested

One of the reasons I bought a Cherokee was for my wife - who hates to have to mess with settings. She can leave it in "auto" and it will do just fine in the vast majority of conditions.

hhipster35ca,

Congratulations on your new Jeep Cherokee! Your owner's manual has additional information regarding the 4x4 operation of your Jeep. You can access a pdf. version of your manual here: http://www.fcacanada.ca/owners/en/se...php?brand=jeep

As per the owner's manual:

Snow —
Tuning set for additional stability in inclement weather. Use on and off road on loose traction surfaces such as snow. When in SNOW mode (depending
on certain operating conditions), the transmission may use second gear (rather than first gear) during launches, to minimize wheel slippage.

When to Use 4WD LOW Range:

When off-road driving, shift to 4WD LOW for additional traction and control on slippery or difficult terrain, ascending or descending steep hills, and to increase low-speed pulling power (refer to “All Wheel Drive and
Four-Wheel Drive Operation” in this section for further details). This range should be limited to extreme situations such as deep snow, mud, or sand where additional low speed pulling power is needed. Vehicle speeds in
excess of 25 mph (40 km/h) should be avoided when in 4WD LOW range.

Our website also has a breakdown of the 4x4 systems at http://www.jeep.ca/en/4x4basics/systemwork

Thanks for all the info, but one question comes to mind when reading your reply:

Snow mode is considered low range? because we don't have any setting that actually says "4WD Low"

thanks

The 4WD system on your Jeep is Active Drive 1.

Active Drive 1 does not have 4WD Low. Active Drive 2 and Active Drive Lock are the two 4WD systems on the KL that have 4WD Low.

Snow mode is amazing in the snow, and can be used at any speed, and shifted into at any speed.

hhipster35ca,

Sorry for any confusion. SNOW is not the same as 4WD Low.

The detail associated with 4WD Low in my post pertains to vehicles equipped with that function. Setting to Snow mode will adjust the system for greater traction in certain inclement conditions.

Welcome to the forum! I've been on here for a few years now with a few different Jeep models, and no matter which section you're in you will always get friendly knowledgeable people who will readily and freely answer any of your questions and/or concerns.

I've just picked up a '15 Trailhawk V6 model a week ago and it has been a dream to drive. IF you had the Active Drive II or the Trailhawks Active Drive Lock system and wanted to shift into low range, then yes, you would have to be sitting or going under 3-5 mph in neutral to shift into low range. But since you only have the Active Drive I version, you don't have to stop to shift it in and out of Snow mode. If you can, read up on the above links to further understand how the various 4WD systems work.

Even with Active Drive II or Active Drive Lock, you can shift to SNOW mode --or sport mode--on the fly.

Re-read my post. I'm sure that I had covered that. If not, I'll clarify.

Lol, yep. I can see now how it can be confusing. Typing in the cold can do strange things to the mind.

In most cases you wouldn't really want 4-low in the snow. Also, top gear is limited in snow mode. 6 or 7. Can't remember which.
