9 speed transmission, is #9 a ghost?

Hey All, I have. 2016 Trailhawk 3.2L 4x4, with the 9 speed transmission. I have tried every trick and I have not ever gotten #9 in the transmission to engage. Seems to be an 8 speed with a ghost 9. Has anyone had any luck hitting #9 on the nine speed transmission and what situation did you hit #9?

9th gear takes a while to get. How do you know it's not engaging? Are you counting the gears? If so, it's hard to count some of the lower gears since they can cycle through very quickly.

9th gear? I have had my Trailhawk about 6 months. I only see 8th if doing 70 mph! I would be happy just to see 8th on a regular basis.

Mine wouldn't gone into 9th until after it was broken in. And, now it'll do it on fast downhills and flats - but not often.

To check what gear I'm in I flip the shifter to the left while in DRIVE (to put it in manual mode) and the gear engaged shows on my display. I'm not sure each model does that.

as Utah Bill notes I move the shifter to left i.e. manual mode and can see the 8/9, at times when I manually elected 9th, meaning I have tried to manually shift to 9th but the 8th remains engaged

There is no 'manually shift to 9' option. Moving the gearshift across shows you what gear you are currently in and allows you to set the maximum gear it can automatically select.

With the tow pack on the TH I can drop into 8th at around 100kmh (60mph) but as our max speed limit is only 110kmh (66mph) I am afraid that 9th gear will most likely never be seen by me. I believe 75 to 80 mph is required. At those speeds my vehicle will be confiscated and my license cancelled!

Cheers, Dave.

X2. I have noticed the same in my Trailhawk.

davesaints, I have over 600 miles on the clock just since last Wednesday the day that I had bought it. Mine engages in flat Interstate speeds without using a light throttle. And yes, it has engaged into 9th many times. The computer will use all of the sensors in order for your Jeep to engage into 9th gear. It's there, the conditions must be just right.

Robert.

It slso needs to be considered what gear ratio you have.

First you have the V6 with no tow pack with the tallest gearing available at around 3.2:1 and will most likely not ever see 9th gear, especially if you dont travel in the 80mph+ area. Even then it would need to be a long down hill.

Then is the v6 with tow pack (or Trailhawk with or without tow pack) and now we are up around the 3.7:1 and younwill.see 8th at around 60mph but still need to venture into the 75mph + area to see 9th.

Then there is the 4cyl non tow and the ratios are around 3.9:1?? These guys will.see 9th at around 60 to 65 mph

Then the 4cyk with tow pack amd the best gearing of all in my opinion up around the 4.1:1. These guys will regularly see 9th at 60mp and hold it dropping to 55.

This was an example and not exact figures (diff ratios are from memory and prior to my morning coffee) and typed without my glasses on.... the main idea.of this post is to explain why some people see 8th and 9th much more than others.

Cheers, Dave.

I have the TH too and our max speed limit is 110kmh (66mph). At this speed in 8th the engine is only sitting at approx 1700rpm

Cheers, Dave.

Hey davesaints,

Congrats on the new Jeep. The nine speed transmission has a unique learning algorithm in its design that adapts to your driving style. The transmission does need some time to adapt to your personal driving a habits. If the concern persists, I would advise you to have the vehicle formally diagnosed at an FCA certified dealership.

I was thinking that there was a learning curve in the computer system. My old 2007 Wrangler Sahara Unlimited was like this too. My new 2015 TH has adapted to my wude range in driving style, from gas sipping to power on demand, and I tell you that this machine is amazing!
