Winches

Why dont people on here build winches...

not just the cheep o direct pull winches that use 5 hp but the worm driven winches that can pull 11,000 lbs with a 3/4 hp motor?

It shouldn't be that hard you can buy a DC motor that hooks right into a worm gear box and then do a sprocket reduction on the backside with a chain yes sure you would have to make a tail stock and figure you sprocket reduction and make a frame, none of witch is to hard. I made and pored all the castings for my winch and pored some of my gears and cut them myself.

instead of a normal motor i just converted a old ford starter into the motor its only like 3/4 horse but pull like an ox. and im drawling a fraction of the amps of the 5 hp direct drive motors are.

Here we go then
On the picture of the motor i drilled a second post through the motor replaced and rewired to coils so i can have a bi-directional motor.

The 2nd pictures just bolts directly up to the 3rd or 4th picture over the main gear that i cut that is connected to the drum

Setting at 350:1 gear reduction over all

not yet... i will get a video of it pulling... i was going to use 5/16ths galvanized aircraft cable, anyone have any other thoughts for it? acording to my calculations i should be able to pull the 5/16ths in half what else could i use that might be stronger?

Breaking strength from 9,800 to 12,500

How dose synthetic rope stack up to that?

depends on the size rope you get.Where did you get the housing from?I can machine all that good stuff so this may turn into a possibility.

You say that like we all have a foundry and a machine shop in our basements, lol.

Regardless though, its pretty neat that you made one yourself.
AS far as synthetic rope, the same diameter synthetic winch lines can have more than double that capacity.

Isn't the worm gear going to make it a bit slow compared to a planetary gearbox? Like, wait for the seasons to change slow?

Mine- 2k TJ, RC 2.5 lift, .75 spacers, Soft 8s, 33" KM2s, winch, lights, and so on
Hers- 06 WK, bone stock until she leaves it and the credit card with me for an unsupervised weekend

Worm gear makes it probably twice as long as but has a lot more power and can hold a load in the middle of the pull such as upward 6,000 lbs in the air with no power and it wont let the load drop down. Instead of having a 5hp motor drawing who know how many amps you can drop down to a 3/4 hp motor and have more pull than a planetary gearbox.

Well since it is the fab forum who know, but you can buy the gearbox and motor from automation direct and make a sprocket reduce it more using chain. and all you would have to do is make a drum and frame.
