standard front bumper build

i got bored today so i decided i'd make another front bumper. i made one about a month ago and was able to sell it on CL for $150, not bad....

i knocked this bumper out in about 1/4 the time it took for the first one.

its all done except the mounts. this time i decided to get the pre-fabbed mounts from Eddie instead of me making them myself like last time.

heres some pics

2x4 .120. measured this one at 48". last one was a stubby at only 42"

then i marked it for the slope. i measured 1 1/2" down and 4" in then drew a line connecting them

on this bumper i decided to just chop it clean off instead of the cut were you keep the bottom and fold it.

after that i cut and welded some 11g flat plate i have to cap it off.

i ground the welds down then ran them over with a flapper but didnt get any pictures.

next up was the measuring and marking for the cutout for the weld through shackle mounts

check out the beef on these shackle mounts. 1" THICK, thanks Eddie

i drilled a hole on all 4 corners where im gonna cut out for the shackle mounts. made sure i drilled all the way through so the holes are the same on the backside

i supported the far end with a small jack and put a level on it to make sure it was all going to be even

then i cut it out. i think i could use some practice at this. or a plasma..... haha

and welded up. its welded front and back but only got front pics

AND DONE, just waiting on the mounts then i'll get them welded up and get it painted.

all in all it only took about 3 hrs.

im getting pretty quick at this in my opinion with the tools i have.

my chop saw took a crap on me a couple weeks ago so the ONLY tools i used on this was a 4 1/2" angle grinder, drill press and my welder.

i swear i can make anything with just these tools

Impressive with the tools. And it came out looking good. Are you gonna go with bedliner or paint??

awsome! I think I'm going to make a few rear bumpers and try to sell them on craigslist just for fun. I bought a ton of steel the other day for cheep and a lot of it happened to be 4x2. Now I've got the welder, 3 angle grinders(flapper, grinder, cutoff), a chop saw and portaband but now I need a drill press to really get in fabrication mode!

so i got the mounts in today from Eddie. i bought his TJ mounts because i figured there is more of a market for a TJ bumper than a YJ.

now i just have to find someone in SD who will let me borrow the front of their TJ so i can get these mounts mocked up and burned in

Do you worry about someone suing you if their air bags don't go off in a crash or a recovery point fails because they were trying to pull a house or something stupid? Just courious in this sue happy world if you though about it at all?
