Got-trikes tubing benders

Im almost done with mine, anybody over here ever built one? Im excited to see it done, it has been a fun little project too. I strayed from the original plans a bit, but it's cool that you can.

I need to get a die from pro tools, a ram, and weld a few more tabs and it's done.

Here it is so far:

Wow, that looks great! I've always wanted to build one. Did you machine the parts in the first pic yourself, or have a machine shop cut them for you?

I bought cold roll flat stock, cut it to length with my chopsaw, used the template in the plans and drilled the holes on a drill press. VERY simple. The arms on the uprights are a different story. Those drilled easy, but were a PITA to line up when welding.

Almost done! I need to get a die and weld the upper die pivot tabs on, then it's all ready to bend!

You MUST share with me those plans! I really need to get one and I'd rather build one myself if at all possible!

the plans are $17, ultimately a drop in the bucket when compared with the overall cost of building it.

When I get further along, i'll probably post some pics. Not much to see so far, just have the holes drilled for the uprights, and most pieces cut to length/mitered. Its a slow project for me

I just bought the plans. I figured for $17 what do I have to lose? I need to get a bender as I sell bumpers locally and I have had numerous request for bull bars, etc.

It looks like a decent bender and the best part is that I can put it on wheels and move it around.

Old thread 08/09
How is the bender working out?

I had the old plans, upgraded to the newer plans and already bought the 8 ton Air/Hydraulic long ram about 2 years ago. I just haven't got started on it yet.

It's about time I get going and build mine.

The nice thing with these is you load the tubing on a horizontal plane so you can use an inexpensive magnetic digital protractor for a very accurate bends.
You can do your bends anywhere even outside when space is tight and not need to bolt anything down to your shop floor. When not in use it can be tucked away, which is a big plus for a small shop.

It is nice that you insert the tube on a horizontal, but its a lot nicer that it bends on a vertical plane. I used an expensive JMR bender to bend some doors, and with only three bends on one door, neither came out flat. I used my own bender to put 6 bends in one tube (roof halo) and they lay all lay paper flat on a concrete floor.

I have used the hell out of this bender, and it has done everything I have asked it to do without a hiccup. Built a roll bar for an S200, a few jeep bumpers, a Toyota bumper and built myself an internal cage. The only issue I am having, is with the hose on the HF ram, it is dry rotted badly and ozone is eating it way. It leaks a bit if kinked at all. I need to fix that.

You will be satisfied with the bender, if built right and used correctly.

The prices are what I paid when building the bender a year ago, maybe a bit different now.

Steel, includes all the cold roll plate, aswell as the 2x2 structural: $130-140

Bushing kit from the plans site: 50.00 shipped ( he had a sale for the summer for 40$ instead of 60$ now)

Grade 8 1" bolt 12" shank: 14.00 and change

Grade 8 7/8" bolt 12" shank: 11.00 and change

So total is close to 200 for the bender hard parts, WITHOUT the Air/Hydro ram, and cost of plans. Ad in cost of paint and casters, Which I had already.

Air/hydro ram form HF: 85.00 out the door (used a coupon and saved 15%)

With ram and 1.5" die= 542.00, so just under or colse to 550.00 for a bender with a air/hydro setup AND a die.

Do you have a link for the plans?
