Wifey and I are doing a non-Jeep road trip thru Texas along I-10 to San Antonio on our way to New Orleans this coming June. Stopping in San Antonio for about a day and a half. We will be checking out the Alamo and the river walk.
My Question;
Since we will be traversing the entire state via I-10, are there any other must see places close along the way? And how about BBQ or other awesome places to stop/eat near or along that route?
You're in for a treat... interstate 10 from El Paso to San Antonio you have 550 miles of open road and a list of towns almost long enough to fill your palm. :smile2:
Can't tell you if there's anything worth seeing in El Paso, I usually go out of my way to avoid driving through it. Fort Stockton in the town of the same name is cool if you like the wild west thing, and if you don't mind a bit of a side trip the town of Fredericksburg has some good German food and the National Museum of the Pacific plus Admiral Nimitz Hotel/Museum.
The kinda sucky thing about the trip is we have a semi tight schedule to keep going, so time will be limited for side trips.
Heading back home will be much looser and doubtful will come back I-10.
Hills lol, its arguably one of the most beautiful areas of the state. Nothing like the mountains and views out west though.
Unfortunately its not like out west here where theres tons of free public access camping. Theres very little land like that in Texas. Practically none.
Done with the trip! Had a great time overall. But you all were NOT kidding. West Texas was loooooooog! Even the 85mph didn't help much. lol.
But about 75 miles west of San Antonio the country started getting hilly and was really nice. Green and lots of wild flowers. :thumbsup:
River walk was cool, but seeing it once will do.
After SA, we kept heading east and stopped at a Bucky Beavers for cheapest fuel on the whole trip! :grin2:
Came home I 40 and stopped in Amarillo at the Big Texan for a really good dinner. DID NOT do the 72 oz. steak! :wink2: But had a really good ribeye! :smile2:
