I am looking to do the same thing... my research leads me to believe that a 242 from a 96 to 98 ZJ or XJ should be a direct bolt in. Someone chime in if I am incorrect please.

I had a 5.9 a few years back (briefly... 3 months after finally finding and buying a pristine one, a guy did a left turn in front of me and totaled it). I searched and bought an XJ 242 off ebay for a good price (just under $100), my son (16 at the time) swapped it in on the backyard grass in a hail storm in 30 minutes. It was simple and worked fantastic!!! Never got the chance to switch the wiring over before I lost it... sigh!!! Just got me another 5.9 (almost 2 weeks now) that I'm going to do the swap in, found a local guy parting a very clean '97ZJ... selling me the 242 for $60 pulled. I pick it up tonight or tomorrow. Will let you know how it goes!!!

Another note... I have my father-in-law's 93ZJ 5.2 limited that we did the 242 swap in and it wasn't a direct swap, so while we had the case apart to swap the shaft, we did all the bearings and seals. Had forgotten that there were the three different input shaft possibilities. It wasn't fun!!!
