Woops! '04 Rear Lid Question.

Our 2004 SE WJ took a hit last night. My wife backed into a tree and broke the rear glass. I installed a used one from a junkyard today, so that's taken care of.

The rear glass latch button operates sometimes. We can't get the rear deck lid to open at all. What do you think happened in there? I pulled the trim back and couldn't see any damage to the mechanism.

did you try to manually release the latch to open it (deck lid)?
Info should be in owners manual.

Then we would look at the wiring, linkage and actuators.

When I see the price of OEM I think aftermarket.
When I see the quality of aftermarket I think OEM.

Hello, thought I'd best leave it a few days, but I guess you'll need to take a word out of the 'hers' description for now?

Maybe the button to unlock it? Mine broke and was very "squishy" and would be a pain to engage.

I finally got a little time to work on her deck lid and it's operating perfectly now.

I had to open the glass and pull the two Phillip's head screws from the rear lid trim on either side of the glass latch. I was able to open the trim up enough to stick my arm down inside and push on the emergency lever while pulling up on the deck lid handle at the same time. That was the only way to open the lid.

I removed the back trim piece entirely and set it aside. I couldn't see anything that was actually damaged. I sprayed the trunk lid latches on each side of the lid with PB Blaster and worked them in and out, opened and closed, for a couple minutes, and that seems to have done the trick. Her glass and deck lid are all back together and operating properly again. I love a good, free fix!

I hope this helps someone someday.
