Im interested in swapping out my 247 for a more traditional type transfer case and have been searching the forums high and low for information. My 247 takes 4-6 full revolutions of the rear tires before I can tell the front tires are kicking in and Im not a fan of it.
In my searches Ive found great bits and pieces of information here and there but have yet seen a post with a great deal of info in one location detailing what we can actually swap (Or I havent found it yet).
So, I decided to create one myself and hopefully help someone like me out in the future. Maybe we can get the mods to add it to the FAQ
This isnt a how to (We have those stickied already in the FAQ), I will update this main section as it develops.
Stock WJ Transfer cases
Details and specifications on the stock cases can be found here - http://www.wjjeeps.com/tcases.htm
242 Select Trac from a 4.0 I6 cylinder is referred to as the 242 (LD) and has the rubber boot on the rear output
242 Select Trac from a 4.7 V8 is referred to as the 242 (HD) and has the aluminum tail cone on the rear output
The Holy Grail is to find a 242HD as this is the strongest of the standard offerings due to the beefier chain and ease of installation. It also is the only one that can give you 5 different selections (2H, 4PT, 4FT, N, 4L)
Transfer Case ID Discussion
The round ID tags on the WJ transfer cases do not appear to follow set description, we've seen 242J, 242JHD, 242WJ and 242WJH
The only positive identification is the presence of either the rubber boot and 27 spline rear output shaft for the (LD) version and the 32 spline and aluminum tale cone for the (HD)
242 Transfer Case Part numbers I found from an old post about New Process Gear's. They claim that the AC, AA, AB, AD, AE letters dont mean anything (Probably shift or assembly line who built it I would guess)

242LD Design Details
- 23 spline input shaft
- 27 spline rear output if your not using a slip yoke eliminator (SYE)
- Does not require a speedometer connection, but is handy if you plan on upgrading axles in the future
- w/rubber boot, w/o speedo hole
- 5 position indicator switch
- cup front
99-04 247J Design details:
- 23 spline front input, 27 rear slip, cup front output yoke, Quadra-Trac / Quadradrive
- .840 exposed input shaft
- viscous drive 2.500 input
02-03 242HD found in 4.7l Select-Trac versions only
- 23 spline input, 32 spline rear slip, two piece tail housing w/o speedo hole, 5 position indicator switch,
- 2.50 front input
Standard WJ case swap compatibility
247J => 242J (LD) Transfer case is a direct bolt up, the 247J driveshaft will work or use the 242 (LD) from the donor vehicle
247J => 242HD Transfer case is a direct bolt up, youll need the rear driveshaft from the 242 (HD) donor vehicle
If you have the 4.0 I6 and want to upgrade to the 242 (HD) - You will need to remove the front input shaft from your transfer case and put it in the (HD), You'll need the driveshaft from the (HD) donor vehicle
Serious consideration should be made for vehicles 4+ to upgrade those cases with a cup type front driveshaft to a double cardon.
Non-standard transfer cases acceptable for use in WJ's
1994 or newer NP231J
- You will need to use the input shaft from your 242J or 247J case with the 231J. The pre-94 231Js have a different gear pitch and prevent the easy swap.
- There are numerous upgrades available for the 231Js including inexpensive SYEs and conversion to 231JHDs using a 6-pinion planetary arrangement and beefier chain (1 1/16 I believe)
- Here is the swap instructions - https://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f310/...-swap-1174663/
- If your at 33 and lower, can you use the original driveshaft and slip yoke if you dont want to go to a SYE ??
NP231D (From a Ram 1500, Dakota or Durango)
- I need help here, there are just rumors of a 242 or 247 => 231D swap. I havent seen anything confirmed yet
- This is ideal since the 231D is actually a 231JHD since it comes with the 6-pinion planetary and beefier chain already so you wouldnt have to do the 231J to 231JHD upgrade
- No idea on front or rear drive shaft compatibility need further clarifications here
242D (From a 98-00 Durango)
- There is discussion on going about the availability of 2WD on these cases and that they are 4PT-4FT-N-4L only on 00+
241JOR - Roc-Trac
This is the new JK transfer case with a 4:1 reduction ratio and is a pretty cool upgrade. So far Ive only seen 1 successful installation and it was a direct bolt up to a 4.0 WJ with aftermarket driveshafts. The 4.7 requires significant adapter plates and internal shafting changes and so far no luck.
Here is the build I followed that details the 4.0L install @grayWJ4x4 did CLICKY
More to follow as updated info comes in.

Harsh, but fair

Its not a 242HD, the HD was only offered behind the 4.7. The standard 242 was offered behind the 4.0.

Way to burst my bubble of thinking I might've had something nice. Now I know.

It was an option very hard to find one factory installed.
I almost bought one but was new to WJ's at the time and didn't know it was a good combo

Also compatible is a 242D from a 98-04 Durango. It is same specs as the 242HD for the WJ.

I would check on http://www.car-part.com you might just find what you are looking for also I found the 242wj which is the 242HD for my jeep on craigslist. and you will need the driveshaft from a 02-03 that had select-trac. Also the u-joint on the TC side is a 1330.

Also, I have seen 242HD transfer cases from the factory in MY 2000, 2001, 2002, and 2003 but never in any 1999 or 2004.

I went to 2 more yards here in Houston and again was pissed off by the end of the day. So I broke down and found one on Car-Part from a yard called Tennessee Auto Salvage. The guy was real helpful and even went out and took pictures of the tags for me so we could make sure it was right. He had 1 242J and a 242WJ.
Needless to say Ive got it heading to the house .... crossing my fingers its not a mess inside but I plan on overhauling it and a new chain either way

The 98-99 Durango 242D seem to be very comparable to the 242HD from the WJ. In 2000, the 242D changed to only have 4FT-4PT-N-4LO (notice- no 2WD). Note that using this case requires swapping the input shaft as the 242D input shaft is too short compared to the WJ input shaft.
