WJ engine swap?

Hello everyone! I learned my lesson from my last post, and searched the forum for answers to my new question, but I was unable to get a complete picture of what I wanted to know. So without further adieu, here we go.

Last month, I got a deal on a 2004 Grand Cherokee Laredo with about 140,000 miles on it. It is a Selectrac 4x4, with an good running 4.0 six cylinder. It has a couple of problems, the main one being a wearing out transmission. I could have the good 'ole four speed rebuilt, but I have had an idea I'd like to get some input on.

Has anyone swapped in a 4.7 liter (standard or HO) V8 from another WJ into one that came with an Inline 6? I realize this would require changing transmissions, and since my old one is on the way out anyway, why not upgrade to the 45RFE while I'm at it AND get more power?

Further, if anyone has done this swap, how successful was it? Would it be a huge hassle for the average mechanic? Could I do it myself provided I had the proper tools and the time to work on it? I know that one must modify the drive shafts and switch out the output shafts from the t-case. I'm also gonna assume one would need a new wiring harness and new control modules for the five speed Tranny and V8 and new mounts for the engine. Would peripherals like the radiator have to be swapped out? What else must be done?

Also, since I've come this far, would one be able to drop in a 4.7 from a newer Chrysler vehicle? I heard that the 4.7s from 2008 forward made north of 300 horsepower. This sounds very attractive, and I'm pretty sure that in the WK the engine was mated to a very similar six speed transmission as what was used in the WJ. I have done some pretty thorough googling and I can't find evidence of this particular swap anywhere.

I am aware this would be a fairly expensive proposition, but I have already sourced a 2004 V8, tranny (with around 120,000 miles), and both the control modules from a local guy for 1500 bucks. After that--as far as I can figure--all I would need is a new harness, engine mounts, and a custom made set of driveshafts.

Anyways, just wondering if anyone out there has done this or seen it done. Any and all input is most welcome.

Luke.

Yeah fellas, not really looking to swap in anything that's gonna require a bunch of custom fabrication and several thousand dollars. I'm in college lol. Anyone else got any input?

The short path is to get a V8 WJ and swap your mods/interior. At the point of trying to shove a V8, trans, and all the associated electrical into the thing you'd honestly be looking at almost as much work as an LS. The only easy way to do either swap is to have the donor there, and at the point of buying a donor wj, just use the new wj.

All of that works on the LS WJ in our club, at least it does when he isn't blowing the motor up with too much boost.

Alrighty boys. Got ya. Does anyone have a link they can drop to that build thread for the LS-swapped WJ? It'd be appreciated.
