Good question, I took it to a mechanic shop because it was going on limp mode. He fixed it and told me he change the fluid.

Have you checked for codes on an OBD2 reader?

did you use a quality SCANNER to ck codes?

what was the issue with it going intolimp mode- codes?

When I see the price of OEM I think aftermarket.
When I see the quality of aftermarket I think OEM.

Just a wag, but have you done the motor/trans mounts? My '99 was getting worse, unrelated I noticed that my mounts were toast so I changed them out. The shifting between gears was noticeably better (especially in low range, smooth now). The engine/trans was torqueing on the mounts making it seem like the trans was shifting hard. With that many miles/years it could be transmission, but check your mounts.
