Whirling/grinding sound from engine

Any thoughts on what this could be? Last work done on the Jeep was replacing the steering gear a few weeks ago. Spark plugs were changed at the same time.

Maybe one of the pulleys?

Sounds like accessory bearings are shot -- either compressor or alternator.

Get the Serpentine belt off and start spinning the pulleys on the front of the engine by hand. There should be ZERO play, and no nasty noises when you spin each one. Also no grinding or "catching" feel in your hand. They should be smooth as silk. Spin then all both directions, preferably going back and forth a couple inches each way. Usually the bad one will show up when changing directions because the ball bearings will have to stop and reverse. Thats when the looseness is most noticeable.
