Transmission expects helpppp

Swapping transmissions in the coming week.. 42re came out of a 97 zj going into a 04 wj. From all that I read it's pretty much plug and play. Tips? Advice? Dos or don'ts?

prefill the torque converter the best you can and always verify the input and output seals bearings and shafts are in good shape. you may as well replace the seals before it goes it as they are an easy switch.

At the least I would
the trans filter,
ATF+4 not universal or 1 type fits all just ATF+4.
Also confirm Transfer case bolts up while on the ground.

When I see the price of OEM I think aftermarket.
When I see the quality of aftermarket I think OEM.

So are all 98 Zjs the same trans as the WJ 4re as well? How do I identify if my 98Zj trans is the same?

1997-1998 had its own transmission. 1999 has its own transmission (valvebody electronics and some internals). 2000-2004 is the same (Part# 52119837AA the valve body and electronics are the same) This is for the 4.0l 42RE. Although they are all 42RE and bolt up, the valve body and electronics are different in each of the versions.
I did a 42RE complete rebuild. Hope this helps. It has all pictures and videos of complete tear down and rebuild.

So you can just swap the valve body and electronics? Which part of the write up deals with that if you have it?
