Spare key and fob for 2004 WJ

Need a spare key and keyless entry fob and don't like paying $300.00 at the dealer!! Do I have other options? Like "generic" fob from Amazon? Or a key cut at Walmart?

Some locksmiths have the equipment to make the key and program the vehicle computer to recognize it. I think it costs around $165 in these parts for the new key and to program it.

My key fob for my 04 WJ is so pathetically bad lol. Only works within 5 feet of the car even with a brand new battery. I asked the old lady for a newer, better one for xmas haha.

Harry is correct. I went to a locksmith when I got mine done here in central NJ and it cost about $150. Couldn't have taken more than 5 min. I should have been a locksmith for a living! Lol

I forgot that the Dorman fob is available and comes with its own fob programmer. I bought one in 2018 for around $50. The price on Amazon right now is $73. So add that to the price of the key and programming.

Some stores around Wis. make clone keys for about 59.00. Basically they copy your key exactly. Fleet Farm has the machines & sells fobs fairly cheaply too.

I got a key made at Walmart . . . engine starts, but shuts off after a few seconds.

Yep. Either that key doesn't even have an RFID chip inside or it needs to be programmed into the computer. That part can't be done without the right tool.

The SKIM system isn't seeing a matching RFID code from the key and shuts down the engine. It's an anti-theft feature.

That's very cool. I'd buy one for the WJ and one for my son's Accord at that price. Right now we only have a single key for each.

They had a new key machine / system about 6 months to a year ago. They clone a lot of different keys. You'd have to call & check about the WJ specifically, as I'm not 100 % sure. There is also a huge selection of key fobs.

How much did you pay for it? If less than 50.00 or more it's not a chipped key.

If you already have 2 programmed keys, you can program additional keys on your own.

Hot damn! i did not know that. I have two keys for everything, so making up some of my own keys should be simple. Thanks Oktavious!

No problem. When I bought my WJ it technically had 3 keys. One in a magnetic box on the frame, one on a key ring, and one in a module for the remote start system. I used the 2 usable keys to make a spare for the house.

Exactly what i was thinking. one in the house, one under the Jeep somewhere, and one in my pocket.
