Rear tires wearing on outside.

Hey all, odd one for me. Bought an 04 Laredo around 2 months ago. 2 inch lift, new shocks, new front everything, yada yada. The rear needed 2x new hub bearings as well, which I did.

Tires were like 5 years old, definitely worn, but very evenly.

I've noticed clunking and an odd clicking when slowing down and under 3mph, sounds almost like a playing card in a bike spoke, only metallic, and only when decelerating/braking at low speed.

Crawled under it and noticed the inside edges of both rear tires are now considerably worn!

I noticed the bushings were absolutely SHOT, as well as my new timken bearing on the driver side is leaking....

I've only put around 1k miles on this thing since I've had it, and the tires looked ok when I got it. That being said, could the excessive wear like this be caused by the wrecked bushings? Id think if it had a bent axle, there would be signs on the tires from when I got it.

Your title says that the tires are wearing on the outside, but the post mentions wearing on the inside.

In either case, not a good scenario. First, it's much harder to see that kind of wear on newer tires. Consider the possibility that those tires may have been on the front and then rotated to the rear. As the tires wear down closer to end of life, the odd wear becomes way more obvious.

I would expect the worn bushings to cause wear across the entire tread, not just the edges, but you should replace them anyway. New arms, with the bushings already installed in them cost barely more than just the bushings.

If the axle housing is indeed bent, I would expect wear on the inside edges, not the outside. That might also explain why both bearings needed to be replaced and that one new seal has already failed. You could start with an angle finder on the face of each wheel. See if each wheel is at exactly the same angle. Each should be at 90 degrees when parked on a 0 degree surface. If the housing is bent, get a complete rear end from a junkyard, with the same gear ratio as you have now, and swap it in. It would be the cheapest and easiest option.

It came to you with evenly worn tyres.

You fitted new rear bearings.
A few miles later, you have unevenly rear tyres.

Sorry, yeah I mistyped, the insides of the tires are what's heavily worn. They were not like that when I got it - there was a slight amount of wear on the outer edge of one, due to having been on the front (owner said they had been rotated semi recently).

So this wear is new. Sucks as I have an 8hr trip coming up this Tuesday hah.. have new LCAs on order, although if I have time, I may just make a pair. Making and installing bushings are fine, I have a press and access to a lathe - just made a set of delrin bushings for my IRO trackbar actually.

The drivers rear bearing was.. trashed. Very trashed. I pulled the axle shaft back out last night and..it looks fine, everything behind the seal looks dry..??? Yet the brake shoe + sprocket on the axle shaft were covered in something. Haven't had time to look further into it.

Pulled the passenger side apart as well, it is not leaking. Neither have any up and down play or noise.

If it is bent, sounds like it might be worth it to find a d44a with the same gears then eh? This is a 4.0 model with the d35.

Guess I can't edit posts - for clarity sake, I meant the passenger bearing was trashed when I got it - driver side was ok, but still replaced anyway.
I'll pick up the HF angle gauge and see what it says, really hope the axle housing didn't bend.

Still no idea what the "baseball card in bike spokes, but metallic" when slowing down and sub 30mph is. I tested to see if it was only when braking, or if slowing down via downshifting/coasting had the same results. Still makes the noise without braking, sounds to be coming from the rear.

Take a look at the shift cables for the trans and t-case. I recall reading they they may need to be tied out of the way because they can rub on spinning parts occasionally.

Could be, I didn't have a whole lot of time to look in depth last night.

I put it on jack stands (under the axle, so suspension loaded), in gear up to 40ish - can't recreate the noise in the air. Only thing I can hear by spinning either side by hand is a slight sound of what I assume to be the gears meshing.

Got home and played more with it - abs wheel is fine and making no noise. Let it idle in drive on jackstands with the wheel + brakes off, showing under .001 in deflection, no perceptible warping or wobbling.

I put all 4 corners on jack stands, all on the same notch, should be equivalent to sitting on its wheels - I'm showing 89ish deg on both sides. So thinking the axle isnt bent..

I somehow missed my shock boots, the ribbed portion very clearly has been contacting my tire for a good 5-6 ribs. They're JK rancho shocks, maybe are bigger diameter than WJ shocks.

Also was able to check out my bushings more. Yeah, they're ****ed. Not like "yeah, there's a little play", but more like "I can easily push the arm to one side or another by hand because the sleeve is entirely separated from the rest of the bushing"
I'm wondering if due to the extreme bushing wear, my rear end has been twerking while driving and rubbing lmao.

It has. And when you replace the bushings you will realize just how much it was twerking. Mine drove like an unhinged lawn chair, especially in a side wind. The upper rear control arm bushings were long gone, I replaced it with an IRO upper arm with flex joints at the frame. I noticed the difference before I even moved, it felt more solid just going into gear. It has been a couple weeks now and the Jeep is actually fun to drive again, like a different vehicle. I had no idea how much my Jeep was twerking until it didn't any more.

2004 Limited, 4.7 modded slightly, IRO 3" RockLink LA front, adjustable SA rear, Bilsteins, Addco bar, JKS disconnects. Coming attractions include 242hd, IRO SYE and Woods DS right after the new engine/trans..
