Purchase price 2004 4.0L one owner 73k mile with some body damage

Hello all. New member. Time to find my soon-to-be 16 y/o a car. We set our budget at $4k. Found a local 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee one owner clean Carfax 73k mile for sale by the original owner. Owner is asking $5k.

Pics looked good, went to look at it. Was willing to pay $5k for it if they wouldn't come down. Arrive and the passenger rear door has a nice scratch in a circle sort of like it was keyed. Not a huge deal. Otherwise passenger, rear and from look good for 15 years old. Walk around to drivers side and looks like the Jeep was dragged down the side of another car. Owner says it was a pile when she was 16. Luckily we live in the SW so no rust. It extends from driver door to front of the rear fender. It isn't terrible at all but it is there. PDR won't fix it as some paint has been scraped off to bare metal. I will attempt to attached pics but I am a new member.

Motor is clean. No leaks. Runs/shifts as you would expect a 73k mile Jeep to run. Brakes a bit soft but work. They had "work" on the brakes earlier this year. Feels like a bit of air in the line but they didn't have the receipt. Work done at local dealer. Hood/rear gate struts shot but otherwise everything seemed to work- windows, radio, ac/heat, etc.

Kbb/nada place clean retail at 38-5200. Talked to owner who at first was unwilling to come down but has now agreed to $4k but won't come down.

If the pics post let me know what you think. If not just imagine the damage that might be present and give some thoughts if you don't mind. Appreciate it.

I'd pass. Maybe I got a good deal but I only paid $1k for mine. it has a good bit more miles but I already rebuilt the engine myself for $500 so idk. Check Facebook marketplace. You can find them all day for $3k or less

I'd probably pass as well. I picked up my 04 4.7L Limited for $3,000 with a bit more miles, but the body was clean. In CA, so no rust issues either. No worries, you'll find the right one!

Sort of how I am leaning. Much rather be at $3k on it. I like the one owner local since new. From the Carfax each service was a local place which means service records should be available if they are computerized. $4k just seems steep knowing it has the rub. And my previous post should have said pole, not pile. Spell check got me.

Appreciate the feedback. If it wasn't for my son I wouldn't mind a higher mileage one. Guess I'll keep looking. Thanks again.

It is nice it has lower mileage (73K) but I wouldn't buy it with the body beat up like that. But if you were turning it into an off-road WJ it wouldn't be so bad.

I will say I paid more than that price for my 04 4.7 Limited but that was 7 years ago in 2012 when it had 74K on it, was only 8 years old, while it was in very good condition. And I bought it from the Jeep dealer used car lot where prices are bound to be higher.

As far as maintenance/repair records my 04 was a Carfax vehicle too and the dealer had the records for it. But they refused to give them to me saying it was a privacy thing with the previous owner. Bunch of bull and even when I told them to black out with a marker any personal info on the previous owner they never would give me the records.

One thing which did make me feel better is I was contacted by the dealer a year later. They had a customer looking exactly for what I bought and said they'd buy it back for the full price for it I paid for it. Yeah right, after I did a complete brake job, installed new tires, etc., and I kept it! Good luck.

96 4.0 ZJ Laredo, 2004 4.7L WJ Limited, 96 4.0 XJ (son's)

I see new tires on that with the mileage so low body damage is fixable.

Tires are new-ish. New for tread but DOT code was 2614. Seller tried to tell me they were put on last year but unless they got NOS I doubt that.

It isn't a limited 4.0L. All cloth interior.

Engine sounded like I recall my last GC but it has been since 2002 when we sold our last one. While not a pro mechanic I do my own wrenching - cam, heads, etc on a couple engines in my life and do most maintenance at home time permitting.

If the tires were new I'd consider it for the mileage but if they're already 5 years old nah. Not for 4000. I paid 4250$ cad for my overland with 205000 kms on it and I'm the 3rd owner.

I pulled the leather seats from a junkyard limited for mine lol. Previous owners kids had a coca cola fight on the original cloth interior. It was pretty sticky in back, hell the seats were glued to the carpet with the stuff.ended up pulling the carpet out and washing it with the hose. The water that came off it was brown for a looong time. Ahh good fun times.
At least I can get my wife to ride with me now without complaining about the smell bahaha.

I'd pass on that one. If it was super clean, a Limited and no damage then maybe. Like you said, this one should be $3K. If you're in the south west there are a ton of WJ's for sale between AZ, CA and NV. Are you looking at ZJ's too?

I know the appeal for a low miles vehicle but I wouldn't pay a huge premium for one. A 2004 is 15 years old now so time alone can cause issues. A higher miles, well maintained rig can be a better buy.

If you've got a buddy that does body work, have him draw up a quick quote on how much it would be to repair the damage. Show that to the owner and drop that off the $4k price for your offer. Sometimes facts shoved in faces really help. I would fight for that WJ.

93 red ZJ 196k 4.0. Spent more money than I should have ...

DOT code of 2614 means those are 5 year old tires; these days tires are designed to only last 5 years no matter how few miles they have. Unless you want your son to be on marginal old tires for the next X years, I would not count the tires as an asset, and would expect to have to get new ones, no matter how deep the tread.
