I have had this issue for months now and have done LOTS of searching on this forum and have found no "permanent fix". I replaced the bulds, fuses, housings, wiring, and anything that has anything to do with my reverse lights and they STILL don't work. I have been told that my TRS (Transmission Range Sensor) went out which is inside the tranny and permanately connected to the solenoid assembly. Then other people told me that the TRS had nothing to do with my back up lights and that I had a wiring problem. After months of new parts, wasted repairs, and a lot of time and money lost I am VERY frusturated. If there is some answer out there PLEASE show us the link, website, etc. The few threads I found on this forum that referenced failed reverse lights never had any conclusions. Everyone gave opinions but the issue never seems to get resolved or at least the original poster never updated the thread with the solution.

I came across someone's thread that had a "permanent" fix for this issue but I've got more searching to do for my XJ than I can handle...or I'd help you try and find the thread again. Sorry...maybe someone else will chime in with a link. OR I saw it on Mall Crawlin'...can't remember.

That thread doesn't really help. That is referencing "Brake Lights". Myself and the original poster have "reverse light" problems. I did do the "pull tab" approach on my reverse lights anyways with zero success. Even bought brand new housings from ebay with no success. The handful of people who have posted threads with failed reverse lights over the last few years never seem to find any answers.

im bringing my car into the shop tomorrow. i bought 2/3 neutral transmission switches since it was cheap and i cant locate it on my jeep to see which 1 i got. i think my jeep has the transmission range sensor under the valve cover which is the one i ddint buy since i cant find it any where online and is a more of a hassle to replace so i may just drive it with no reverse lights if thats the case.

I think your referencing the NSS(nuetral safety switch) which I was told the 545rfe tranny doesn't have. It's all part of the TRS/solenoid assembly. I was told that the 4.0 tranny has the NSS but not the 4.7. I am assuming that info is correct but maybe I should do more homework on that. If what you purchased actually does fit on your rig and fixes the problem, PLEASE post up your results.

On my Wrangler, they were unplugged.
Rear lights wiring harness plugs into front harness right on top of the trasmission. It's a locking plug attachment so someone had to unplug it...no idea why?? Had to drop tranny skid/crossmember to reach it... real pain.

I assume all Jeep wiring harnesses are somewhat similar so worth checking into.
Follow your rear wires forward to next junction and see!

I appreciate the help, but unfortunately I already did that. I even thought it could be the wiring harness itself so I bought a new one from the stealership, but no luck.

You have the 545rfe tranny from the 4.7? I was told the 545rfe doesn't have a NSS but maybe you will be able to prove them wrong. And what is a d.s.?

ok so we checked it and it is indeed the TRS/solenoid assembly. the 4.7 def dosent have a NSS. they even took a meter to the harness and there is power. so im just going to drive it witout the reverse lights.

i dont even know what part to look up online for the TRS.

Since the TRS is part of the solenoid assembly you unfortunately have to buy the entire solenoid. The new ones range from $400-500 and the refurbished ones are all around $200-250. I have come across a few used ones with low miles for around $100-150 but everytime I try to buy one they are either already sold or its just an ebay scam and trying to find a local junkyard with an 02 or newer v8 WJ has proven itself to be impossible. Probably the most frusturating issue I have had is the fact that I have not come across a single person that had their reverse lights out and actually replaced the TRS/solenoid assembly and were successful with fixing their lights. Everyone tells me I need to replace the TRS but nobody has stepped forward saying they did it. That leaves me REALLY hesitant to drop big cash with ZERO personal experinces on the success of this repair. Right now I am just in wait; optimistic that someone who had our issue will come forward and share the solution. Unfortunately I will continue bumping this thread and my own to the top every week or so in hopes of actual personal and successful solutions.
