My Project: 2003 Grand Cherokee Laredo

Hello. Today, I purchased another jeep. This time it is a 2003 Grand Cherokee. I already own a 2020 Wrangler JL Rubicon and a 2021 Grand Cherokee Trailhawk. The wife doesn't like the idea of me taking my 50k Wrangler off to some trails and beating it up against whatever I can find... so her idea was for me to get a "project" jeep. This jeep was driven by her friend that drove it while in college and I only paid 500 bucks for it. It drives really nice and the tranny seems to shift without any problems. Now, don't get me wrong... there are some things that will require addressing:
1. No horn
2. Passenger window appears to tilt off track
3. AC doesn't work
4. Leaky radiator cap
5. Front leather seat have since better days
6. May need a new valve cover gasket
7. Rims have seen better days
8. Heated seats don't work
9. Front head lights are hazed
10. Door panels are loose (missing clips)

Thats what I know right now. It has 250k on the odometer. My plans? I am thinking a lift, bigger tires, and all those other offroad goodies.

For now, I should probably pull a "goonzquad" and give this jeep a good wash (inside and out). Feel like joining me on this journey?

looks like a decent project. Find the coolant leak fix first. Then chase the other stuff if it isnt something major.

Check the left and right motor mounts and transmission mount. Mine are toast.

Heck yeah, keep us in the loop! Always like to see what others are up to with their WJs.

Am I the only one that uses leather treatment on their seats? I mean, mine are showing wear too but not like that.

Ok... wow, today's wash was the most intense car wash that I have ever done. There was so much... what appeared to be some sort of fungis/mold growth on the roof and in ever nook and granny of this jeep. The gas cap was so dirty that I couldn't see the white writing on the cap! All the decals and stickers are removed...Lol

I still have the interior and engine bay to clean.

Good news- the horn is fixed. I first swapped the wiper and horn relay but that didn't fix the problem. There is a 15 amp fuse for the horn, as well. That was my problem! Yeah - no clock spring for now...

As I was looking for my horn problem, I noted two more issues that may need addressing before state inspection:
1. Battery hold down is missing (will buy)
2. Both upper headlight assy clips are broken and both units have a little play (might roll the dice)

I'll check on those mounts this week.

Thanks

I had one of them broken. Before buying a new part I thought I'd epoxy it first. It's held up for quite a while now.

I saw on internet a 3D file free shared; if you have a 3D Printer you can print it; I don't know if there is a Mopar spare part; other Solution is JunkYard

I did the same as WJ60, plus sanded the junction and covered with aluminium tape: still working.

I do have a 3D printer but I found it so much easier to go to my local Advance Auto Parts on my home from work (today) and picked up a Diehard battery tie down pack for 8 bucks. The pack has several different styles of hold downs and one is exactly the one I needed. Check another one off the list! Lol
I do appreciate the recommendations. Please keep them coming. Just be patience with me as I work thru these maintenance issues to get the old girl ready for MD State Inspection. After that, then I am going to be asking advice for the lift, tires, winch and all the fun stuff!!!
Thank you.

WJ60 - if I had the other pieces I would epoxy but they are broken clean off. I could always fab something if push can to shove.

Saturday I am planning on replacing the thermo and the passenger window regulator assy. Rotate tiree, check brakes and change the oil. Deep clean interior and engine bay on Sunday. Then it should be off to the inspection lane early the following week... fingers crossed.

I wish the driver seat in my '03 was in such good condition. I ended up having to get the power seat frame re-built and reinforced. Same with the seat pan where it bolts to the seat frame. They aren't made anymore so buying a new one is out. Sure you can buy a used one, but odds are it's broken and/or cracked somewhere. I've heard it called the "Jeep Lean" or "Jeep Rock". When you redo your seat cover, take the time to inspect it's frame for damage while you have it out of the vehicle. If it's not damaged yet you should think about reinforcing it before putting the new seat cover on and installing the seat back in your Jeep.

I wish you luck and hope you have a great time playing with your new(to you) WJ.

I work in a FAA certificated Repair Station and I have access to some of the best interior mechanics on the east coast...lol. I am planning on having all the seats recovered, which I plan on having a topic just on that. My options are pretty much limitless. Thanks for the heads up on the reinforcement, I will plan for that as well.

I also have one of those Headlight retainer clip thingy's break off, and looking to get one...Suggestions (no junk yard for me) ?

Since this may be your Off road Rig, think about getting some Soft 8's or similar, and some Off road tires (not rock crawlers or mud).

Oh, and @Inspec25 , you have a 2021 TrailHawk...Damn you :-0

Here is my 99’ Beater WJ...Yeah, I know. it needs a lot of work.

JoMc67- are you kidding me? That 99 looks beautiful. When I say I own a 2021 Grand Cherokee please understand it belongs to "princess"... lol My daily is a 04 B4000 that I love to death (which will be my next project after the WJ). I drive too much to drive the Rubicon as a daily (70 miles a day).

WJ update - had the wife run to dealership to pick up some of those interior door panel pins (yeah, the yellow ones). Can you believe 6 pins costed 36 dollars? Ouch...
