Made a swing out tire carrier for my WJ...

I've been wanting to learn to weld and I had a few days off over Christmas, so I decided I would make a swing out tire carrier for my WJ. A friend had welding equipment and kindly allowed me to use his shop and his MIG welder loaded with flux core wire (which I quickly decided if I ever get a welder I'll use a shielding gas). I read about welding before hand, practiced for a few hours, and dove right in, sink or swim. After about 40 hours it was finished, my welds definitely improved and I did all the work except for about 20" of welding under the Jeep that required welding on while lying supine, I just didn't feel confident enough.

Anyhow here are the pics, the final product stayed pretty close to my prefab design. I used a A to Z fabrication hinge, wheel mount, T locking handle and a Front Runner Jerry can holder. (Non-Carb Nato Jerry can is on order)Also, I ended up adding a spring latch near the hinge that locks it open when 90* to the Jeep.

The mounts which were welded to the side to the trailer hitch

Rear of the Jeep trimmed, mounts in place

Mounts and lower brace welded in place

Swing arm mounted

This is the last picture I took before I cleaned it up and primed/painted it. The spring latch that holds it open is not installed in this photo, I'll try to get one tomorrow.

Final Product...

That is about the cleanest looking spare carrier on a WJ I've ever seen.

Nice work

I generally don't like the looks of the WJ, but that looks factory to me and very good. Excellent job, sir!

Nice! Great option for those who cant afford a complete bumper and don't want to put it on the roof.<-- Like me

Any rattles? If you can, please provide detailed pictures of the latch.

Been thinking about doing the exact same thing! I would love to see some detailed shots! Also what size tire is on the carrier?

Thanks for all the kind words! I've gotten a lot of questions asking about its locking mechanisms, so I got some better photos today. Please keep in mind we've got snow on the ground and there is salt everywhere, so it's dirty.

When it warms up I'll clean up the cut margins on the bumper...

Can we get some measurments on the tubing and the size? How far away from the Jeep is the base tube and did you weld it all the way across? Can we get some pics of the bumper trim? This looks like a great option and fairly easy to do. Great job!

That looks great in the pictures! I really like how you retained the stock bumper cover. Nice job man! I think it would look 100x better with cleaner cuts on the plastic, but that is a minor detail.
