Didnt we have someone on here a little while back that bought heads that came without some plugs installed? Was It Cdee63?

Did you clean out the head bolt cavities well and use a chaser? if you get oil, coolant or debris down there you risk not getting proper torque.

Finally got a chance to check out your guys suggestions. Spent the morning taking everything back apart, did perform a pressure test on the coolant system which did not show the same leak in the header "holes". Instead a slight leak on the timing cover which should be an easy fix. Drained some oil, damn there is a lot of coolant in there, attached a picture of that as well. Also a picture of the valve gap on one of the headers but im fairly sure thats just pushed down by the cam. So main culprit is coolant leaking into the oil pan/engine and out of the exhaust manifold. Since I have the heads back out is there a best way to see what the hell is going on? Also a picture below of the hole where the coolant has been pouring out of before the cats.

Yes, probably hard to tell in the picture but I cleaned all the gasket mating surfaces and razor blade scraped all of them clean followed up by some heavy degreaser.

i haven't dealt with a 4.7 motor before, but i am noticing you have direct contact roller rockers, without pushrods. this can allow for almost zero lash, and is probably the most responsive setup, for valvegear. you should be able to adjust the lash out of that setup, with no issues. if you see no wear pattern on the cam lobes, and the rocker wheels are all round, roll freely and don't have scorching or flat spots, you are good to go.


those two super clean, shiny pistons tell me, they are being "steam cleaned", and are getting water into the bores. you'll need to chase down the source, either leaking head gaskets, crack/hole in cylinder walls, maybe a warped head, or a nick/bump on the block near those two holes. get a straight edge, and check the block and heads. in multiple directions, looking for a gap, or by feeling a bump. (slide the flat edge around, side to side, up and down, and look for a gap or if it stops itself, find out why)


the water in the oil is troubling. the cylinder walls, or water leaking through the head into the valve area is really the only way to get water into the oil. (unless the shop pulled the heads, and let the water from the heads (if any were present) to drain into the center galley, and fall into the sump)


a leak in the timing cover, from the waterpump, could be possible, but rare. the back side of the pump housing would have to be leaking, into the front oil gallery. good luck getting it sorted, and hopefully you don't wipe the bearings, trying to find the source of the leak.

The heads pictured are new to me and were just remachined although I think them to be the defect now. I know what you mean about the piston heads but trust me they were all the same color before I cleaned everything up. The original heads had been overheated and were misfiring on #8 which was about to drop the valve seat so I went ahead and bought new heads for both sides. After the fourth install of the new head which was done with multiple sets of new head gaskets and head bolts, im convinced that the remachined heads I got have some sort of defect. Im talking coolant running out of the headers like a hose. Im going to contact the shop today and start the warranty process, while I cant see any obvious defects via boroscope or naked eye, the coolant leaks are only happening when starting the engine or when it is running. I cant recreate the same leak by pressurizeing the coolant sysyem with a hand pump!

I have " Heard " but never seen and cannot confirm. That if you put the serpentine belt on wrong it will blow the coolant out of them. Sometimes it's that simple. Just thought I would throw that in there.

I take it you had the coolant system full when you pressure tested? What tool are you using to pressurize the system? Do you have pictures of the ENDS of the heads?

Sounds like you need some good spot lights and a big hand held mirror to look behind at the situation. I know saying and actually being there are different things though
