how to tell if pcm or skim is bad?

I have a 2002jeep grand Cherokee limited that I got second hand (boy I am sorry) I have many issues with it and I will put in a few threads if I can not find a answer (4wheel drive linkages and a/c issues) but here in this thread I need to talk about the pcm and skim unit. The enginr is the one with the N in the vin so it is the 4.7 eng

When the JGCL was delivered we had to jump it to get it off the lot (first bad omen, I should have ran then) after round and round with them they replaced the battery and use a interstate discount economy battery (35 dollars) still had issues I put a good battery into the car my self but had charging issues in the end we have a NEW battery NEW alternator and NEW starter. Also replaced the toumber pins with new pins as it stopped working.

We received 1 key and had one made (locksmith clone I think) I kept having start and shot down issues so I took the car a dealer and have them make a factory key (200 dollars). Still have the shut down after starting issues. Sometime the no key light will be on and all is well sometimes not on for days to a couple of weeks and works great. When it is failing to see the key or validate the key and shuts the car off, I started lightly hitting the steering column and it would see the key I also could normally move the steering tilt up and down and sometimes that worked trying to see if anything was obvious I have the column cover off and pushing the connector sometimes helps. But now nothing is working to get it to work I even unhook the battery for 2 days to see if it would reset the pcm (yes I removed the pcm battery fuse as well). Now I am completely frustrated with this Jeep (always wanted one but this maybe that last).

Now the questions am I looking more to the pcm or more to the skim unit and how to test (if you can ) each one. If I buy a reman that is been cleared can I just remove the skim before installing the pcm and solve it (would this remove my remote door fob and alarm? not share if I care that someone steal the thing them might be doing me a favor!

The best in the end is use remote and alarm but no skim

where is the bast place to but the pcm or skim

If the only fix is having the skim and it is bad I know the pcm would have to be replace or reprogram (400 from the dealer) but can you buy a skim only (with keys of course) put it in before installing the pcm to program to it and how does that mess up the physical door lock

Thank you for any and all help

You're really close, but this is the section for the ZJ grand cherokee (93-98) and we're not gonna be much help since the ZJ never had SKIM.

Your jeep is a WJ, and the section for that model is here: https://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f310/

I've asked a moderator to move this thread there for you.
