Hi and my first question

Just got my first Jeep - a 2000 GC WJ limited. I'm in the UK so things may be a bit back to front.

I had 2 remotes with the car but the previous owner has never had them working. New batteries (there were 2xCR2016 in there which I replaced with a CR2032) haven't sparked them into action.

Aside from replacing them via the Dorman Key Fob 13778 (which is just the one fob by the looks of it and I need two), is there any way I can get these two working again? I'm guessing main dealer costs to sort this out would be ruinous.

Of course I don't actually know for sure that the receiver part in the door is working or not, or whether replacing that would trigger a full scale reprogramming exercise.

I have a range of OBD bluetooth units from back when I was finding one that worked with my Jaguar Sovereign if that helps at all.

Thanks

Joe

I don't think the dorman programmer works on export WJ's as we use a different frequency to the US.
try syncing the fobs by pressing the lock button 8-10 times since you have changed the batteries.
then you could try a locksmith who can check the fobs are transmitting a signal.
my brother has my second fob and only uses it now and again so has to press the lock button a few times to get it to unlock.
so if they are sending out a signal and still not working the locks then a trip to the dealer is needed as you need the 4 digit pin code to access the security bits to clear the old fobs out and program in the 2 you have.

Thanks for the replies.

Door locks work from the switch on the drivers door panel.

I've also read conflicting stories about batteries. CR2016 is indeed half the thickness of a CR2032 but stacked in a pair give out 6V instead of 3. So I'm also wondering if I have the correct batteries in there or even if the person before stacked the CR2016s has inadvertently fried the remotes.

My remote has always worked but after a while you needed to be very close to the vehicle. I replaced the batteries - two CR2016 - and now all is good again.

Thanks. It's a public holiday here so I might be pushed to find 2016s but will give that a go.with 2032s I get no response from the remotes.

The Dorman kit works but you need UK frequency remotes to work with it - the fob that comes with the kit is no good here. My 2001 WJ didn't come with any fobs, so I ordered the 13778 'Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep' kit, and got a couple of used Grand Voyager (I think?) fobs off eBay for 20. Worked a treat programming them to the car, but the car doesn't seem to recognise them as key 1 or key 2 seat/mirror settings etc, just locks/unlocks.

By way of an update fzz has let me borrow the programmer. My two remotes didn't work and he suggested (and even found one on the 'bay) trying another that was stated to be working. I did that and have one working remote now which is a massive relief as I didn't fancy a door panel job as I am the kind of person that would be breaking clips.

I'm going for gold and have ordered another fob from eBay to see if I can get a pair going.

Hope that's useful. I am going to try 2016 Vs 2032 batteries to see if the voltage difference affects the pitiful range it has at the moment. Currently I have 2 2016s in the working fob although the age and power of them is unknown.

Hi

One final question from me on the door fobs. I have today got two programmed have a third as yet unprogrammed fob too.

Question: how many fobs can be programmed in total? Is it limited to two? If so I'll send fzz his marvellous tool back, if 3 is possible I'll do that and post it tomorrow.

Now I'm stable with 2 working ones I didn't want to tempt the gods of FUBAR without checking if 3 was possible. Knowing my luck I'd end up with zero working if I just went ahead and tried it :-)

Cheers,

Joe

the handbook says up to 4 fobs can be programmed and CR2016 batteries or equivalent.
And have a range of 7 metres 23 ft.

Thanks. Ok I'll give it a go.

7 metres! I'm lucky if I get 4 or 5 steps!
