Wj Evaporator hosed or scam?

So, A/C hasn't been able to keep up lately. I'm in FL and the temps have been bumping 90 here in Orlando.

Was hoping that (given how the previous owners didn't maintain the Jeep well) it would just need a refrigerant top off and I could slowly back away clean.

I stopped off at a place today and had them check it out since it was right on the way home. The guy charged it up as he said it was pretty low, and it was definitely cooler after that. He let it sit (off) for about 10 minutes then took some type of air sensor and measured the air I assume. He came out and said my evaporator was leaking, and he'd be more than happy to charge me $850 to remove the dash and replace it.

Just wondering if this is high, low, or a scam. The charge for sure got things colder. I need to tint the front windows to help out. I have funky flow through the middle vents (https://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f310/...rappy-1330404/) and when I accelerate hard the A/C switches to defrost then back (prolly the vacuum hose under the battery tray).

Can I do this job myself? <== (not a mechanic, just a tinkerer)

Honestly $850 for this job is cheap! Most places charge in the $1100 and above range to do it. Either this guys cheap or he doesn't know what he's getting himself into.

This job isn't so much hard as it is tedious. But wjjeeps have a great write up for dash removal along with the FSM if you have it. Watch out for that one bolt by the steering column and firewall, url sorta hidden. Expect 6-8 hours for the job depending on your skill level.

i dont think it was an "air sensor", well sorta. But its called a refrigerent sniffer. What it does is senses any leak of r134 in the air. So if he was putting it up to your vents with the a/c running and it went off (beeping noise) that would indicate that the evaporator was leaking.

It calls for 6 hours book time to do the evaporator, but i dont know what your normal labor rate is down there.

Awesome. Do you have to drain the existing r134 out to replace the evap?

I would get a second opinion.Im not saying hes right or wrong, but if your spending $1000 to have it fixed, and you have no history with the shop, get another opinion so you know your not getting ripped.Dont tell the new shop anything, let them tell you,and go from there. You should also change your drier and orifice tube, especially if its original and has been operating with a leak.

And yes the entire system needs to be recovered, evacuated and recharged to spec.

Yeah, I'm going to try to get someone to look at it tomorrow. We'll see if the prognosis is the same.

Replacing the evaporator is pretty straight forward, it's just very very tedious. If you can follow and directions and are mechanically inclined, you can probably do it yourself. The evaporator itself is only $70-$100 for the part. And yes you have to drain the refrigerant.

When I took my dash out, I used egg cartons to hold all of the bolts and pieces that came out. I also took some notes and labeled the little egg sections. That way, re-installation was expedited--just put the bolts and screws back in the reverse order.

My family owns a keep dealership and we charge almost 600 for my last overland at my cost! (with parts) your best bet would be to maybe try to find someone you know who could cut you a deal on labor. If no other options, then 800 doesn't sound too bad.

Yeah and you might as well do the blend doors too while its all apart. Tearing the dashes apart is a real pain on the WJ. $850 isnt bad.

I'm in the middle of this job right now. My heater core was leaking that's why I'm doing it. I also did the blend doors even though mine weren't broke. But from everything I hear they will. It is very tedious but doable. Follow the directions on Wjjeeps and you shouldn't have a problem. If not, like everyone said $850 isn't bad but do the blend doors and even the heater core while it's all out. Good luck.

Update: took it to 2 places this morning and both the places said they couldn't find a leak.

Guess it's a waiting game to see who's right. Thanks for all the responses!

did they fill it back up? It might be empty again and that's why their detector isn't detecting.

Yeah both places tested pressure, temp, and sniffed for leaks. I'm thinking the first place just thought I'd happily hand them $850 w/o getting another opinion. Everything is blowing cold still, so we'll see.

Awesome! If it turns out to be a real leak then I'll hit you up for those shops. Hard to find legit places these days.
