Anybody have experience with replacement leather seat covers?

I spend all my time in the CJ forum and don't know Cherokees very much but I told a friend I'd help him out by asking this question on the WJ forum.

He's got a 2004 Grand Cherokee with leather seats that are pretty much shot. He wants to replace them - not cover them up, but actually remove the original upholstery and replace it with new leather using the hog rings and all that.

I'd appreciate hearing from people who have reupholstered their Cherokees and specifically what brands/manufacturers to use, or to avoid.

Thanks for any advice.

I looked a while back, I think Mopar had some left , but colors were limited . There were some on ebay but in my style they were pleather. I ended up getting an entire matching seat with no rips for $200 shipped to my door from dead Jeeps.

If its an overland good luck! they just don't exist anymore and I just gave up. When I do mine (eventually) I am just going to an upholstery shop and telling them I want real leather to match the oem look not that fake cheap garbage.

If its got an all black interior having a brown leather would look so good not only that but would keep the interior so much cooler as well. My 16 longhorn has the black and brown interior and there is no comparison at all the ram is 50% cooler inside vs my jeep on a hot day. If my overland didn't have the dark and light slate grey door panels my seats would match my ram's.

I kept an eye on eBay and scored a NOS passenger side front. With a few simple tweaks it fits the drivers side no problem.

Id find a nice used set.

Theres a company that sells the oem style covers in either leather or fabric. Fabric was about 250.00 each.

Ive thought about it, but my seats are still intact..

....Nothing in leather (dark gray/slate gray (2-tone))....only synthetic leather...not OEM.
Like I said, I searched without any luck. If you have anything 'specific' for my needs, I'd love to hear about it.

I am one of those that went with the Katzkin leather. It was as you mentioned, quite a chunk of change, but the seats came out really nice.

I posted my results in someones WJ seats thread on here somewhere...

It was about $900 to do a crew cab Ford Super Duty. I imagine it would be about the same for a WJ. Is that about what you paid?

I wish mine had been that! Mine set me back $1395. I guess they are charging more because its a lower volume seller on WJs? It was a kick in the pants, at least the seats are nice to sit on.
