Another PCM swap question

first off I just spent the last2 hours searching this forum and cant find an answer

So my 01 GCL with a 4.0 has the skim issue ,, runs for 2-3 seconds then dies
My no key light is on steady pulled code p1686 i think thats what it was..

I understand if I swap the pcm skim module igniton and keys with the same year I should be good to go

My question is.... I have access to a 2000 GCJ with the same options, if I pull the pcm skim module ignition and keys and swap into the 01 will it work to get me running again

If anyone has done this and had success please let me know.

Why not just have the known working ECM flashed to your VIN at a local dealer?

It may take a couple of calls before finding one to do it, but it's far less involved than replacing the ignition lock cylinder, door lock cylinder, skim and ECM.

Expect to pay roughly $100 to have it done.

Gone:
'00 Limited
'03 Laredo

Current

'14 Overland EcoDiesel

All that will work other then the 2000 4.0L PCM is not compatible with your 2001. I have seen these packages on Ebay or you can find them at your local junkyard on new arrivals. The downside to this is that the SKIM PIN code will be unknown to you. This will be a problem if your PCM, SKIM ever fails or you need to add more keys to your Jeep. Your p1686 is more then likely an issue with your PCM and not your SKIM.

What's the difference in the pcm that makes it not work... or as long as I chanel all the components involved pcm locks and skim it will work... these are not difficult to change.. just need to know before I actually do it.... as far as the pin if I get vin# I can get that from the dealer..

Another option ... will a 01 cherokee pcm non skim work on an 01 Grand Cherokee

Not sure what the hardware changes are, only know that the check engine light will not turn off with a 2001 PCM in a 2000 (tried it). My guess is the same the other way around. Even looking at car-part.com the two PCM's do not cross reference. Sure if you get vin# you can get the PIN from the dealer. Only if you are the registered owner of the Jeep with that VIN number.

There is no such option an a 01 cherokee pcm non skim. Only some of the early 1999 had no Skim.

Lets clear the air. If you are talking about a Grand Cherokee WJ then what I said stands. If you are talking about a Cherokee XJ then yeah the Skim was an option. Cherokee XJ and Grand Cherokee WJ parts are not interchangeable.

It's because of stuff like this why I can't stand dealers. No one, not even dealers sell brand new PCMs for our Jeeps they are too old, they are ALL remanufactured. Some of the outfits in Florida are flooding the internet market with trash. I have heard people say good things about remanufactured Cardone PCM's that can be had from local part stores for around $200. You might want to start a new thread asking about them to find out if the come programmed. I'm sure someone here has info on them.

Heres my update on my fix

I found another GCL 4.0 thats was being parted out because of an accident
I pulled the PCM---the Immobilizer and the Ignition with Keys
Swapped them into mine and she fired right up and no issues with the security

total cost of parts $60.00

now I need to figure out a previously issue hestitation

This information is GOLDEN and should be added somewhere in the FAQ portion. Getting the Immobilizer and Ignition with Keys must get you around requiring to have your new PCM flashed to your specific VIN.
