for the banging up shifts.......I know there is a Quick Learn for the 45rfe and a shift learn procedure to fix slopy or harsh shifting...... I do not know if it applies to the 42re or not but its worth looking into

For what it's worth, the 42re in wife's ZJ is flawless at 198K (I don't know the full service history, though)

193,000 on my 4.0 WJ. Never had an issue with the 42RE. Trans fluid and filter changed every 30K miles.

No problems with the 42RE.

The 42RLE however is a worthless piece of junk as programmed by Chrysler. It can be fixed by someone knowledgeable. I had one in my old RAM. Rebuilt 3X times with less than 175K on it. The third rebuild went back to an extremely reputable shop that specialized in racing transmissions twice under their warranty before they tried a custom program for it. That fixed it (although 1-2 shift was much firmer than before)
