42RE Transmission Adjustments

I think I need to adjust the front (kick down) and rear bands on the 42RE that I have. Does anyone have any pointers before I try this and what size is the Torx socket for the front band?

I also noticed that line pressure and throttle pressure can also be adjusted but I don't think that I need to touch them. Am I right?

I did a partial rebuild on my 42RE a few years ago. Had the overdrive rebuilt, shift kit, new electronics, new sensors, and adjusted the bands. I can’t remember which method I used to adjust them but there are two different ones.

The absolute best tutorial I found was written by baxy years ago. He has since passed but his legacy lives on in the thread. I used his numbers for re-drilling the holes in my solenoid plate and it shifts pretty nice now. I still have a 2-3 clunk that’s due to some extra clearance on the drums. Also I’m sure you’ll find a broken solenoid spring in there if you go deep enough in to the transmission.

Very nice write up. I have 4 WJ's and they all shift differently. I may be using this thread someday.

Check this out, pretty clear YouTube video on how to adjust the bands.
