42re need a definitive answer ZJ vs WJ

I have a 98 ZJ, has the 42re trans, and need a trans for the 2001 WJ. I have now heard a couple different answers about "plug and play" with these- one saying it's a direct swap, everything works, plug and play, another says it all bolts in perfect, electronics different- I am pulling the ZJ trans this weekend, but I don't want to start pulling the WJ apart to put it in if there isn't a definitive answer here!

1997-1998 had its own transmission. 1999 has its own transmission (valvebody electronics and some internals). 2000-2004 is the same (Part# 52119837AA the valve body and electronics are the same) This is for the 4.0l 42RE. Although they are all 42RE and bolt up, the valve body and electronics are different in each of the versions.

I did a 42RE complete rebuild. Hope this helps. It has all pictures and videos of complete tear down and rebuild.

I am having a little bit of a hard time actually seperating out what I need to do vs that whole rebuild, I only need to adapt the used, but good, 97 42re to the 2001 WJ 42re electronics, or actually vice versa- the 97 is good, the 2001 is slipping.
