4.7V8 Turns but won't start right away

I just bought this used '99 with the 4.7V8.

Just recently when trying to start it the engine turns strong but won't start right away. After about 5 seconds the engine fires and runs great until the next start-up. (Maybe we should never shut it down...)

It sounds like it's not igniting.

I thought it might be the coil, but apparently the 4.7 has individual coils, one for each plug. So, I'm doubting that would be the problem. (But maybe...)

The fuel pump is working and there appears to be plenty of fuel pressure in the log.

I checked the ASD relay and it appears to be fine as well.

I haven't invested yet in a code reader (but that will soon change).

Any ideas regarding what the trouble could be?

Next time you start it turn the key to on..not start..for two seconds then turn to off then start as normal.
Have you done any maintainence lately ?

@ Rocklobster...

Re the fuel filter: That's possible, however there appears to be plenty of fuel available at the log. It certainly won't hurt to put a new filter in, though.

I tried the "turn key to ON" for two seconds procedure, but no difference. What does that do?

That will run the fuel pump for two seconds and basically prime the system

You should check your fuel pressure while cranking to narrow down a cause

When I replaced mine, my (exact same issue) did not go away.

I also already cleaned my IAC and installed new spark plugs a few months ago. Neither helped.

Im not going to worry about throwing money at it, since its more of an annoyance than anything wrong.

Thanks for the input everybody.

I unfortunately don't have the time to mess with it so I'm bringing it to my mechanic tomorrow.

I'll post what the issue was.

in the exact same situation

have changed fuel filter, plugs, cleand every thing like air temp sensor idle control unit, and it still does it, have not done the fuel pump yet, however have read other pots here where even doing the fuel pump did not help, so I have held back on dropping the tank.
my one has gotten worst over time, and if the tank is bellow 1/4 and I turn hard to the right it cuts out

meantime will keep watching such threads till a solution is found or something breaks that I can say found it
