Texas Axis Deer VS. WK2 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Thank God I traded my Ford Fusion rental for a JGC earlier this week. Split second highway encounter with a Ford Fusion and a Texas Axis dear could have left me and my girlfriend paralyzed or worse.

I cannot see the damage too well in the dark but it looks like that will be in the shop for a few days. How's the deer?

I've had a few encounters with deer on my way home from work at night since I've owned my HA, never when I drove my Chrysler on the same road for years. The darn things just jump right out in front of me from the woods. Both times I have been lucky. The first time was just a few weeks after I bought my HA and the deer ran into the side of it when I was going around 45 mph. I was sure it left a dent, or at least some scratches, but after close examination I could not find any dents, marks, etc. The second time it jumped right out in front of me on the same road and I did an unscheduled test of the ABS and swerved, missing hitting it by maybe 1/2". Are deer attracted to Jeeps or something?

The last two pics show the external damage. Wondering if the car is totaled.

If you hit a deer hard enough to deploy airbags, then there is a good chance that it is totaled.

Can't tell anything from those pictures.

Glad you and your girlfriend walked away unscathed. Cars can be replaced, people can't.

Any word from insurance as to what the verdict is?

Sorry the pics are unclear. I am sure that the adjuster will take more in daylight and I will post. The deer was huge and left a barrel-shaped gouge across the entire front of the vehicle. The windshield was also cracked.

Totaled - even if the adjuster thinks otherwise initially.

The vehicle performed amazingly. It came to a complete stop without even leaving the lane - straight as an arrow. We had no "burn marks" from the airbags or even seatbelt marks. The steering wheel airbag slightly tore one of my fingernails as it deployed but not even enough to produce a whole drop of blood. I've been driving Jeeps exclusively for 40 yrs since I was 15. In spite of all of the issues with the new ones like radio, headlights, etc., I have a newly discovered respect for this incredible machine.

Dang...you sure that wasn't a moose? Glad the truck protected you guys and you're OK! I put a deer whistle in the bumper on the fronts of all my Jeeps and also have "good luck Spot" guarding us while he sits on the rear view mirror. So far so good.

While that's never fun and it pains me to see a GC in such shape... what always matters is that you were able to walk away from it. Helps to know that these things live up to their safety ratings!
