Sunroof stops halfway open

My 2012 dual pane sunroof has started opening just halfway. I saw that there were others on this forum that experienced the same thing years ago. Did any of you get it resolved and fixed? I just returned from the dealer and he said he thought it was a mechanical problem because they tried to reset it and it didn't work. The estimate was over $950 and I just said "no" and I had to pay over $250 for them to just look at it. So now I'm coming here to see if anyone found a way to get it fixed without going to the dealer and paying what can be over a $1000 repair.

Can anyone help?

Thanks.

Is it opening about 8 inched more or less then stopping? Or is it opening part way an then reversing direction?

I just got lost in thought. It was unfamiliar territory;

Thanks. I tried that over and over again and the reset procedure doesn't work. Besides, the dealer's service tried it and it didn't work.

Thanks for your reply. It doesn't open then close automatically. It opens like it normally would, but just stops halfway. It's like it's programmed to stop there, but it can't be reset to open all the way.

The reason I asked is that usually means the glass motor module assembly got itself into manufacturing mode somehow. There is no way to reset that, on early models, short of replacing the motor module. The glass and shade motor/modules are interchangeable and most shops will try swapping them to see if the problem follows before tearing into the tracks and cables. For mechanical problems, the glass or shade will open/close part way but then usually reverses as it senses an obstruction.

Thank you for the detailed explanation. I'm sad to hear that it might need a motor module since it is a 2012 (made in October of 2011). I was afraid to hear what you wrote. I guess I'm just going to live with it opening halfway, which is sad since one of the draws to buy the wk2 was the panoramic sunroof.

I'm sure an extended warranty would cost more than the $1000 that it would cost to fix the sunroof. With over 173000 miles on my vehicle an extended warranty might also not be available.

You buy the warranty when the vehicle is new so that when you get to this age and things break. I have had two JGC and bought warranties for both and received back in the cost of repairs more than I paid for the warranty on both vehicles. 110,000 on my 15 and it drives/handles like new but with all of the electronics any day one of them may stop working.

It seems like Stellantis is starting to consider things like bushings to be wear items once the vehicle reaches 130,000 miles or so. Its harder getting shocks replaced if they are not leaking.
