Scam? 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee license plate LED light - $412?

Hello folks!

So .. just failed inspection because one of the two LED license plate lights was out.

Thinking it would be the usual $1-3 light bulb and 5 minutes to replace,
we were told by the Jeep dealer (Jeff D'Ambrosio, Downingtown) that it would be over $400 parts & labor to replace the license plate light "assembly".

Checking around at MOPAR they are kind of giving the same story,
because we only have the assembly part # to go on.

We can't find the part number for the led itself,
and the number shown on the led housing (89WXP597 rev *N/R* 7VDC)
is not coming up.

Is there a way just to replace the bloody bulb?

You cant get just the bulb but $412 is crazy. 68360247AA is for with rear camera, or 68360246AA without rear camera. Thats the harness and led's.

I would be adding some Bullet LED lights to it.

Yea thats the other option. I assume its nothing special just a standard 12v LED. If you are handy with a soldering iron, you could just solder something in...

Wow! Even $183 on Rockauto. I would look into trying to find one used. Probably not much work to replace it.

I called jeep customer care (844-533-7928) yesterday 11/20 and they agreed to pay for the cost of buying & installing the harness. You cannot replace just the bulb, as far is I know. I just called and said how much I loved the jeep, but.... Also, I am original owner, so don't know if that makes any difference. More questions email me at famstaff ( at ) att.net

Both lights are series connected, thats why they r 7volts. Veird design, if one lamp is out the other will be off. No wonder why they dont sell lamps separately and sell the whole harness with lamps, probably different design, 12v parallel connected. This should be recall, definetly, as design mistake.

Try calling Jeep customer care and explain your problem. US Customer care agreed to pay for my new harness including installation. Telephone is 00800 0 4265337.

what have you guys done about this??

Hello guys, i have read all your posts. I am having the same problem and Jeep refuses to even help me on the payment. looking at ~$500 with parts and labor I assume. has anyone caved and paid for it? I can't stand giving them that much money to illuminate our plates!

On rockauto they cost 100usd ish, not sure if they come with harnessing. In jeep shop they dont offer lamps separately anymore, only together with harnessing, thats why its so expensive, probably. If the lamps are dry inside and not completely corroded, i would just snip those plugs off, sold wires directly onto lamp contacts and sealing with epoxy, just watch polarity.

Different in the UK?

I am in the UK where our KJ's have a plastic cover fitted over the spare wheel...The number plate/reg plate is screwed onto this cover inside a recess and the lights are above that...Now I like the idea of having my spare wheel showing like they do in the states but it means I will have to relocate both the reg plate and the reg plate lights. Normally the rear plate is the normal long rectangle shape but in the UK we also have the option of fitting a shorter, squarer looking rectangle plate if we wish...it just means relocating the lights. So my plan was to fit the new plate onto the back door on the left hand side of the spare wheel and light it with a reg plate lighting bar off some other vehicle, which I will simply screw onto the door above it...The KJ has 12V electrics so this as simple as pie...So I can't understand why are you guys having problems???
