Oil Filter Housing
 
Ugh. Count my 2014 JGC Limited as another victim of the plastic oil filter housing problem. We noticed oil spots on the floor of our garage about a week ago. I figured it was from my 2012 Accord thatís got over 140,000 miles on it... but a trip to the Honda dealer confirmed that no, that engine is bone-dry on the outside. We turned our attention to the Jeep, and it turns out that the oil filter housing is cracked. From what Iíve read, the part before 2014 was metal, but was redesigned to plastic in our model year. The replacement part ($800 later) will also be plastic, and I wonder if this problem will simply recur once again?

Iíve never had a car leak oil with only 40,000 miles on it. Sigh...

I think they were plastic in all years, earlier models had bypass valve problems. Its fairly common to crack them by over tightening. If you or your grease monkey don't abuse it, it should last. The part was revised for 2014 but it also seem to be a bad year for these cracks, until they revised the part again.

I get all my service and maintenance done at the dealer, and one time they also cracked my oil filter housing. Saw droplets of oil on my garage floor (over the course of days), and they replaced the broken part and shampooed my engine.

After reading of the possibility of a cracked housing...I bought one...just in case I cracked the one I have (I change my own oil). I believe having a back up greatly reduces the odds of cracking your housing...maybe reverse Karma...donít know but I have seen this relationship before...

Thats good insurance, I have a garage full of just in case parts, some for Jeeps long gone :) To replace a cracked filter housing by the book, the intake manifolds needs to be removed. That is a relatively big job on this V6. Its not so much the $100 part, its the hours of labor.

WHAT is part that cracked? The Item 1. - 68308741AB adapter housing or the Item 2. -68191350AA cap?

It was the adapter housing (741AB).

Its tedious sometimes challenging as the intake manifolds need to come off and there are plenty of things connected to them. Once the manifolds are off its pretty straight forward. You also have to remove the manifolds to change spark plugs, and there are a few threads that discus it. How hard it is depends on if you are a tech or a backyard DIYer. Once you've done a couple, its not bad. But there are a couple bolts that require some skill and dexterity to loosen. The right tools help a lot.

I see that I am gonna have to learn this new to me 3.6L 24v V6 PUG engine and the body attached to it. I have been mainly maintaining Alfa Romeo 164 3.0L 12v engines and the attached car bodies since 1991.

Those Busso designed engines as something else and came out in the 1970s. I have maintained my 1991 ones for over 29+ years and I have done pretty well.

I have learned a lot about our 04 WJ overland V8 and the attached body but have not had to go into the deep end of the pool very often yet.

This is one of the reasons I purchased the lifetime warranty on my Wrangler. Of course, since I change my own oil and filter and torque everything to spec, even if the base cracks due to degradation, they will likely claim that I caused the failure and not cover the repair.

I had to look into this a few years ago, when that part broke on my daughters vehicle. replacement was kind of a PIA, but easily done in an afternoon. The problem on the earlier (2013 and older) was the oil by-pass valve would break off. and some people got these covered by the powertrain warranty. But a cracked housing might be harder to get under warranty. (unless the dealer did it.)
