Had to go to non-dealer for radiator replacement. Will Mopar honor warranty?

2014 Overland 5.7
Mileage approx 120,000

Radiator went while I was driving yesterday around 5pm. I had no choice but to take my car to my excellent mechanic (who was nice enough to come tow me from the road to his shop thank god). I have a MOPAR Unlimited Lifetime Maximum Care warranty and when I called Mopar, they said even though I'm over 100k mileage, the radiator is still covered.

So I don't know if Mopar will reimburse me for my cost at the mechanic's. I'm just praying they will. They said I can send a letter with my claim explaining why I didn't use a manufacturer mechanic. In the hopes that maybe they will take pity on me and reimburse me anyway (dealer as closed and I was in a FULL out panic and dealer never has loaners and I have to drive in order to work... etc!!)

Anyone know how understanding they might be, and cover my payment? I know to also include the repair order and payment receipt with my letter.

It's not a cheap job so I'm kinda stressing here. Thanks for any help. Sondra

Try contacting Jeep Cares. This sounds like a personal safety issue and if no local dealers could respond in a timely manner your claim should be 100% justified. I am not a lawyer but I still like to believe that good people will do the right thing.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but this is from my copy of the MaxCare Lifetime Service contract I purchased with my 2014 JGC:

"OBTAINING PLAN SERVICE: Plan service will be
provided or assisted by the Dealer who sold you the Plan, at
his place of business, using authorized remanufactured
parts. If remanufactured parts are not available, the
dealer will use new parts. In the event you cannot return to
the selling Dealer for service, you may request service from
any Chrysler, Dodge or Jeep Dealer within the 50 States,
the District of Columbia, Canada, Guam, Puerto Rico or
Mexico.
IMPORTANT! PLAN SERVICE OBTAINED FROM OTHER
THAN A CHRYSLER, DODGE OR JEEP DEALER IS NOT
REIMBURSABLE UNLESS AUTHORIZED BY CHRYSLER
SERVICE CONTRACTS BEFORE THE SERVICE IS
PERFORMED. DEALERS CANNOT AUTHORIZE
REPAIRS."

Thanks but I spoke to the Mopar people who told me to send a letter with my claim explaining why I had to do what I did, as they might make an exception. So I’ll see and cross my fingers.

I didn't mean to be a "debbie downer", just wanted to give you some realistic info. I'm pulling for you to get it covered. I had to have my radiator replaced, and was glad it was covered, as it is a rather large expense. Good luck!

Oh no worries, I totally understood! I appreciate having that input!
Just curious, do you remember what you would have paid?

"UNLESS AUTHORIZED BY CHRYSLER
SERVICE CONTRACTS BEFORE THE SERVICE IS
PERFORMED" That is fundamentally correct; i've been in this situation twice, called for pre authorization...first time they agreed, 2nd time they told me I had to take it to a dealer, would not authorize.

BTW...as your service contract and vehicle get long in the tooth, Jeep will find "reasons" for not fulfilling they're obligation per contract, forcing you to fight. It's also why they no longer have lifetime sevice contracts. I know from experience.

Thank you..
Do you think it's worth risking my warranty and worth asking if they'll reimburse me for the radiator? Bill was $660 parts, labor and tow.

But WHO did you talk to?
Did they authorize it over the phone?
To my understanding, the authorization has to be done before the work starts.

It's not going to hurt to ask but their authorization needs to happen before

Oy. Maybe I went about everything wrong. Maybe I should just eat the money and not file any claim.

The Who was the person on the phone at Mopar Warranty cs who, after I explained what happened, emailed me a form to send back with the work order, the receipt I got, and a letter explaining why I did what I did at a mechanic’s shop. She said by including a letter there is a chance they’ll understand and not void the warranty plus reimburse me for part of the bill.

Whether I spoke to someone who knew what they were talking about I have no idea 🤷‍♀️

It would have cost slightly over $1,000 at my dealer about 3 years ago. I would definitely file the claim with all the paperwork they wanted. I can't see how they could void your warranty, and you may get some reimbursement. The only downside would be if you have issues with the repair, you could only go back to where you had it done. Let us know how this works out for you. I will be a learning experience for all of us. And, good luck!

OK, you've mentioned several times about concerns that they might void your warranty if you file a claim and try to get reimbursed for this. They will not "void" your warranty but they might deny a warranty claim - two different things. Your lifetime MaxCare warranty will still be active for future problems.

Hopefully, they will take into consideration the circumstances and reimburse you for the repair. At any rate, I *think* they will cover the cost of towing, no matter where you had it towed.
