Front Left Suspension Noise 2015 Grand Cherokee Overland

Since the beginning I have had a suspension noise on the front left on my 2015 Grand Cherokee Overland 4x4. When I got the car brand new I would only notice it on very high speed bumps at low speed. It has been getting progressively worse over the past year that I owned the car. I have had it at the dealership twice, however, they "cannot find anything wrong" - which I find ridiculous. Even took the technician on a test ride, he acknowledges the noise but said it is normal for the air suspension. I tried to explain that if it was normal, then why does the right front not make the noise and he had no counter argument...

What I noticed recently is that the noise gets worse the colder the temperature.

I uploaded a video demonstrating the noise: https://youtu.be/cFdbnJFVWaQ

Does anyone have any idea what this could be / where it is coming from? Is this really "normal"?

Ben

Hi Ben,

I'd like to check in with our techs here at headquarters. Would you mind sending your VIN in a PM so I can look into this further?

Thanks!

It's been doing that since you bought it? I wouldn't let a Service Adviser have a moment's rest until he addressed it. From the sound, I'd guess a bad shock or bushing somewhere. Could be just a bolt/nut loose that's allowing movement somewhere that shouldn't have it.
You've got the air suspension; does it make the same sound at all ride heights? Can you recreate the sound by hand ? If so, you can get under the vehicle and locate the sound while a buddy pushes it up and down to create the noise. As loud as that is, I'd imagine it would be easy to find.

Yes, it's been there since day one - just not as bad. Visually inspected the suspension and could not find anything. Unfortunately also cannot recreated it by hand. I tried different ride heights and it is present in all heights. I took another video today that shows the noise from the outside of the vehicle: https://youtu.be/dugfA8qkSKY

I would really like to speak with the 'technicican' who considered this to be a normal noise. LOL

Get used to it. Jeep dealers don't fix anything unless the car is leaking or the engine explodes. Jeep should change their slogan to "We couldn't reproduce the problem".

Our brand new overland makes a kind of golf ball inside a thick metal box on the drivers side front when going over bumps. It is currently at the dealer because of a brake noise, the golf ball noise and "rail dust" issue now

Hi benvb,

I checked in with STAR and they agreed that the sound is not normal, and that the best guess just from looking at the videos is that something may be rubbing the suspension when it is compressing. They advised going back to the dealership. I know you said you can't PM, but I don't have any owner information on file with your vehicle, so if you can send an email instead to [email protected] to my attention with your full name and contact information, I can follow up with you about making an appointment and getting STAR involved at that time.

benvb,

Did your suspension noise issue ever get resolved? If so what was the fix? My '14 EcoDiesel w/ QL is making the same noise from front left suspension over bumps. It's getting progressively worse. Seems to happen more in colder weather. Dealer replaced that side's whole suspension assembly about 1.5 years ago (at ~10k miles iirc) for the same issue. The noise is back now, currently at 29k mi.

Thanks for any info you can pass along.

I hope you get it resolved.

I've got a clunking noise on my '17 trailhawk with the QuadraLift. Dealer and I tested three or four and they're all the same so I hope it's not "normal"

I'm taking it back to the dealer next week. It will be the 4th time for this same issue.

I think the more solid clunking sound is the suspension travel maxing-out. I think that is considered normal. This happens especially in the higher lift settings because it doesn't have as much travel.

My issue sounds more loose and creaking.
